Vasszécseny combines geological themes with sacred art and architectural history. When planning your visit, the Ásványmúzeum is especially important: it has no fixed opening hours; visits are possible by contacting the museum in advance and arranging an appointment.

Minerals, Rocks and Fossils

The Ásványmúzeum displays minerals, rocks and fossils from historic Hungary and the surrounding countries across four rooms covering 120 square metres. Historic Hungary extended beyond the borders of the present-day country. Visitors can learn about geological eras; minerals, crystals, rocks and fossils form the thematic framework. Also on display are the coats of arms of the mining towns of historic Hungary and wooden statues of Saints Kinga, Barbara and Anna, displayed together. A carved Bányamanó figure draws on mining legends from Besztercebánya and Selmecbánya. The museum also displays the painting Teremtérmítosz by artist Vincze László.

Church Art and Local History

At the intersection of Petőfi Sándor utca and Szécsenyi István utca stands the obelisk commemorating the 800th anniversary of the first written mention of the settlement’s predecessor. Ebergényi Benedek had the Nagyboldogasszony Church completely rebuilt in the Neoclassical style between 1835 and 1837; at that time, it received the name Nagyboldogasszony, which it still bears today. In the central section of the main arch of the nave is a painted version of Gyula Benczúr’s allegorical drawing about the Lands of the Hungarian Crown. It was created by József Dragovics, a painter from Vasszécseny. Directly beside the church, the Keresztényi Közösségi Ház és szoborpark comprises a parish house and a sculpture park. In the village district of Lipárt stands the Keresztelő Szent János Church, the oldest listed building in the municipality of Vasszécseny.

Castle Park and Architectural History

The Új-Ebergényi kastély is surrounded by a well-maintained park covering 14 hectares. The coat of arms of the Ebergényi-Viczay family can be seen in the gable field of the façade gable. The building in Vasszécseny known today as the Magtár was built as the Festetics sörház, or brewery. Hofstadter Kristóf may have designed the building; he worked for Festetics Kristóf in Keszthely as an estate architect.

A Cycling Tour in the Region

South of central Szombathely, a cycling tour in the region passes more than twenty castles and notable buildings, including the listed granary in Vasszécseny. The village is one stop on a longer tour. Check the route details before setting off.

When planning your hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between a focus on the village and a regional cycling theme: the museum and churches represent the geological and sacred heritage of Vasszécseny; the cycling tour includes the granary as part of a larger group of regional buildings. This can help you decide whether the village’s cultural history or cycling in the wider area should shape your trip.
