The Roman Catholic church in Rábapaty brings together several specific aspects of the town’s history: its cruciform shape, a chapel with a crypt, and a named altarpiece. Before 1754, Frkas Gábor had a chapel with a crypt built south of the church. The church was enlarged again in 1823. By adding a chapel and an extension on the opposite side, it acquired a cruciform shape. The altarpiece “Birth of the Virgin Mary” is by István Schaller.
Churches, Art and Local History
Another religious landmark is the Evangelical church at Kossuth L. u. 14. The monuments listed in Rábapaty also include public sculptures. At the ninth Patyi Vesszős Festival in 2019, local craftspeople offered woven baskets at Liget tér. At the same edition of the festival, the stone “Kőbe vésett barátság” was unveiled in Rábapaty. Alongside the churches, the townscape thus features a historic festival event, local crafts and a named work.
If you are looking for a hotel in Rábapaty, you can give your trip a clear focus: church architecture and local history relate to the town itself; nature, routes and museums belong to the broader destination of Eisenburg. Decide which perspective is most important for your stay.
More Themes in the Eisenburg Destination
A broader view of Eisenburg includes landscape and cultural themes. Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County and encompasses the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. Őrség National Park was established on 1 March 2002 to preserve and present the natural, ethnographic and cultural-historical values of Őrség. These represent different aspects of nature and landscape conservation.
The routes also have distinct focuses. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút leads to five spa complexes in Vas County and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other spas. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy. The named route themes therefore differ for your planning: one features spas and visits to architectural or natural attractions, the other three specific destinations.
Romanesque architecture in Eisenburg can be compared through two churches. St. Michael’s Church in Csempeszkopács was built in the Romanesque style around 1250; the Romanesque church of Ják Abbey was consecrated in 1256. The dates are close, but refer to different events: the construction of one church and the consecration of the other.
The Vasi Skanzen complements these examples with the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County over the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. The cultural and historical range of the Eisenburg destination thus extends from Romanesque churches to rural buildings and ways of life.
