Csénye offers travellers two distinct routes to guide them: the Mária Út, a Central European pilgrimage route to Marian shrines, and the Országos Kéktúra, a long-distance hiking trail. Both pass through the village, but each has a different focus. There is also a church with a historic bell, a war memorial, a chapel and other evidence of architectural and agricultural history. If you are looking for accommodation in Csénye, you can choose where to stay based on these cultural and natural interests without confusing the two routes.

Two Different Routes Through Csénye

The Mária Út runs from Mariazell through Hungary to Csíksomlyó, passing about 60 pilgrimage sites. These sites shape the route’s pilgrimage focus; for trip planning, it is also important that the route passes through Csénye. Check the trail conditions before travelling.

The Országos Kéktúra also passes through Csénye. It is a long-distance hiking trail running from Írott-kő to Hollóháza and is more than 1,100 kilometres long. The two routes differ in their defining features: the Mária Út is described through its Marian shrines and pilgrimage destinations, while the Országos Kéktúra is defined by its continuous route and its two endpoints. This can help you decide whether the pilgrimage route or the long-distance trail better suits your trip.

Church, Bells and Remembrance

The Church of St John of Nepomuk in Csénye was built in the 17th century. Beside it are a restored bell and a restored bell frame. Their restoration was reported in 2023; both were formerly in Fűztű. Their previous location gives the bells a story of their own, alongside the history of the church building.

The war memorial stands next to Csénye’s Catholic cemetery. It commemorates soldiers from Csénye who died in the First and Second World Wars. The church, bells and memorial offer different historical perspectives: sacred architecture, the bells’ former location and the remembrance of those who died in war.

Architectural History and Landscape

In Fűztű, there is a stud farm stable built in 1906 in the Neo-Empire style. This important building is a heritage monument with agricultural significance. The Újmajor Lourdes Chapel belongs to Csénye and was built in 1911 by the Bavarian ducal family. The buildings represent different aspects of history: the stable reflects agricultural history, while the chapel represents religious heritage.

The Benedek Elek Fairy-Tale Park on Vasút utca has wooden play equipment. As individual pieces of equipment may change, it is best to check the latest information before visiting. The wooded landscape and proximity to waterways are also important to the area’s character, enabling its integration into equestrian and hunting tourism. This offers a different perspective from the two routes: the landscape and its tourist use rather than a pilgrimage route or long-distance hiking trail.
