The entire administrative area of Szaknyér lies within Őrség National Park. Szaknyér is also part of the Natura 2000 network of European importance and the historic Őrség region. Nature and cultural heritage offer two perspectives on the village: the landscape, protected plants, and wildlife watching sit alongside a memorable lime tree, traditional architecture, and historic landmarks. When planning your visit, it is worth first considering whether you would like to discover Szaknyér mainly through its landscape, its history, or both.

Landscape and Nature in Szaknyér

The landscape around Szaknyér alternates between hilly and flat areas, with forests predominating at higher elevations. The protected cyclamen grows in parts of these forests. A specific opportunity to watch wildlife can be found in a meadow beside the cemetery: wild animals can be observed from hunting stands there. The landscape and the observation point offer different nature experiences: on the one hand, the variety of hills, plains, and forests; on the other, a designated place for wildlife watching. Nature lovers can therefore enjoy both a broader landscape setting and a clearly identified observation site.

History and Local Architectural Styles

Several specific landmarks bring the village’s history to life. Szaknyér was first mentioned in writing in 1428, under the name Zathmer. The Mária Terézia lime tree was planted in memory of Mária Terézia’s coronation. With a trunk circumference of 3.6 metres, it is a prominent landmark in the village’s history. The lime tree stands in the eastern part of Szaknyér and can still be visited; it is considered one of the village’s attractions. Beside the village hall, approximately in the middle of Szaknyér, stand an old bell tower and a fire engine. Some buildings still display traditional Pitvaros or Kódis-állásos features. Szaknyér’s cultural traces therefore include not only historical dates but also architectural styles and local objects.

Spring and Vadregényes Café

A spring stands by the access road from the direction of Hegyhátszentjakab. It was built by soldiers at the end of the Second World War and also serves as a resting place for thirsty hikers. Vadregényes Café has a small gift shop and serves coffee. Drinks include coffee, hot chocolate, homemade syrup, and fröccs, as well as coffee variations with chocolate and fruit notes. If you are planning to visit the café, it is best to check its current opening arrangements in advance.

Planning Your Stay

Szaknyér is a cul-de-sac village, accessible via connecting roads between the municipalities of Hegyhátszentjakab and Kisrákos. If you are considering the village as a base for your stay, you can use its different highlights as a guide: landscape and wildlife watching on the one hand, landmarks and architectural styles on the other. This can help you decide whether you would like to include nature and local history in your stay.
