An ethnographic collection and a restored blacksmith’s workshop give Pankasz a tangible cultural connection; there are also cycling routes with Pankasz as the destination or return point. If you are considering the village as an overnight destination, you can weigh whether the collection and traditional craft or cycling should be the focus. A prior appointment is required to visit the workshop.
Culture in Pankasz: Collection and Blacksmith’s Workshop
An ethnographic collection is housed in a former school built in 1885. The collection is thanks to teacher Kováts Béla (1922–1994). Its location, year of construction and personal connection give this collection a specific historical context. Travelers interested in ethnography will find a different perspective here than on a visit focused on traditional crafts and architecture.
The restored blacksmith’s workshop is next to the bell tower and can be visited by prior appointment. If the workshop is an important reason for your trip, arrange your appointment in advance. This allows you to include the visit as a separate planning item rather than assuming you can drop in spontaneously.
Cycling Routes with Pankasz as the Destination or Return Point
One cycling route follows the old railway line to Pankasz. Another section runs from Szőce via Őrimagyarósd to Viszák and then back to Pankasz. The descriptions therefore differ mainly in their routes: one follows the old railway line, while the other links the three named places and returns to Pankasz.
When choosing, you can consider which of these routes better fits your travel plans. The places named provide a concrete basis for comparing the two descriptions, without suggesting that they form a single circular route. If cycling is to be a major part of your stay, you can make it a separate focus alongside visits to the collection and blacksmith’s workshop.
Events and Travel Planning
By February 2025, the Pankasz municipal administration had already organized a Rönkhúzás and a Bolondlakodalom for the fourth time. If you want to combine your trip with one of these events, check in advance whether a current event date has been announced.
The Wider Travel Destination of Vas County
If you include the wider travel destination of Vas County beyond Pankasz, you can consider additional nature and cultural themes separately. Őrség National Park was established on 1 March 2002 to preserve and present the natural, ethnographic and cultural-historical values of Őrség. Írottkő Nature Park is in the northwestern part of Vas County; it includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. In the wider travel destination of Vas County, Őrség National Park and Írottkő Nature Park offer two regional points of interest for visitors interested in nature and culture.
The wider area of Vas County also offers clearly defined points of interest for culture enthusiasts. Vasi Skanzen presents the rural way of life and folk architecture of Vas County from the past two centuries. Since opening in 1973, it has rescued and rebuilt 43 buildings from 27 settlements. Two Romanesque churches add to this historical perspective: St. Michael’s Church in Csempeszkopács was built in the Romanesque style around 1250, and the Romanesque church of Ják Abbey was consecrated in 1256.
When choosing a destination, you can therefore decide whether to focus on Pankasz’s specific cultural and cycling themes or include additional nature, folk architecture and church themes in the wider travel destination of Vas County.
