At the nearby Vésztő-Mágor Memorial Site, cultural history and landscape come together: Pákásztanya recalls fishing and gathering, while the nature trail along the Holt-Sebes-Körös follows the riverside landscape. In Vésztő, two historic houses add another perspective on life and the history of the town.

Cultural History at the Mágor Memorial Site

Pákásztanya is a low, two-part house. Inside, visitors can see everyday objects, including vessels, nets, tactile tools and fish traps. These objects bring the memory of traditional fishing and gathering activities to life.

The Mágor-puszta protected area covers around 947 hectares, includes the memorial site, has been protected since 1987, and forms part of the Körös-Maros National Park. The nature trail along the Holt-Sebes-Körös offers an opportunity to explore the riverside landscape and its native flora and fauna. Parking for buses and cars is available at the memorial site; check the current conditions before your visit.

The Sinka-ház and Tájház in Vésztő

In the poet Sinka István’s former home, the Sinka-ház presents an overview of his life’s work. Photographs, manuscripts, publications and personal belongings provide the foundation for the exhibition. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

The Vésztő Tájház—the House of Crafts—is a farmhouse built in the 1880s. Its sequence of rooms includes a living room, kitchen, another room, pantry, summer kitchen and stable. This layout gives a clear sense of the historic house’s arrangement.

The two houses focus on different things: the Sinka-ház centers on the life and work of a poet, while the Tájház presents the layout of a farmhouse. Visitors interested in literature will find a different way to explore local history here than by looking at the architecture and the sequence of rooms in the Tájház.

More Destinations in the Wider Békés Destination

In the wider Békés destination, Körösvölgyi Animal Park in Szarvas offers a different kind of nature experience. It is set in a 26-hectare grove with a walking trail around two kilometres long. Along the trail are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures.

The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail starts at the park’s jetty. It follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake; eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow and its flora and fauna. The trail is particularly suited to canoeists and rowers without an expert guide, and can only be reached by canoe or boat. It is therefore quite different from a walking trail on land.

At the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely, near Dévaványa, visitors can see great bustards at close range—the only place in Hungary where this is possible. On request, visitors can arrange expert-led tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy demonstrations. The Réhely Trail begins and ends at the visitor centre. The Mágor-puszta Trail is just over 500 metres long and introduces visitors to the protected area’s natural and cultural-historical values.
