Szeghalom offers points of interest in nature, architecture and local history. The Reformed Church of Szeghalom was built in the Baroque-Copf style and has a Greek cross plan. The Szeghalmi KÉK-Tó nature reserve lies near Szeghalom; its lakebed is crescent-shaped and mostly covered with marsh vegetation. The collection at the Nagy Miklós Városi Könyvtár és Sárréti Muzeális Gyűjtemény also offers insights into professions, everyday life and the history of the town.

Natural Areas and Tours

The Szeghalmi KÉK-Tó nature reserve lies near Szeghalom. The distinctive crescent shape of the lakebed and the dominant marsh vegetation define its character.

From early spring to late autumn, rowing, horse-riding and cycling tours for small and large groups are organized at the Várhelyi Ifjúsági Tábor. The offering includes three different ways to explore the outdoors, but is intended for groups. The tours run seasonally; operational details may vary. If you are considering a group tour, it is best to check the specific arrangements in advance.

Church Architecture and Local History

Two architectural features are noted for the Reformed Church: its Baroque-Copf style and Greek cross plan. Together, they give the building a clear architectural presence in Szeghalom.

The collection at the Nagy Miklós Városi Könyvtár és Sárréti Muzeális Gyűjtemény comprises four exhibition areas: traditional professions, rural ways of life, crafts, and an exhibition on 900 years of Szeghalom's local history. The themes present different aspects of life and the past side by side. Three areas focus on occupations and ways of life; the fourth is devoted specifically to local history. This means that a cultural visit can take in both social themes and the town's local historical context.

Nature Experiences in the Wider Békés Destination

Szarvas is part of the wider Békés destination. The Körösvölgyi Animal Park in Anna-liget, Szarvas, is located in a 26-hectare grove. A walking trail about two kilometres long passes bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. The route connects these different areas within the park and can help orient visitors interested in wildlife and varied habitats.

The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail offers a different way to explore nature. It begins at the pier of the Körösvölgyi Animal Park and follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations share information about the oxbow lake and its animal and plant life, particularly for canoeists and rowboat users without an expert guide. The route is accessible only by canoe or boat. This access requirement clearly distinguishes it from a walking trail on land and is important when comparing nature experiences in the region.

At the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely near Dévaványa, visitors can see great bustards up close; this is possible only here in Hungary. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomy presentations can be requested. The site combines a distinctive wildlife-watching experience with several possible programme themes; these activities are available on request.
