Nestório is divided into Upper and Lower Nestório; Lower Nestório extends to the banks of the Aliakmon. The settlement preserves its traditional color schemes and architectural identity. You can walk through the settlement with its red-tiled roofs. This reveals the character of the place not just through individual buildings: the walk draws attention to the settlement as a whole. For Kato Nestorio, a cultural stay is therefore connected both with the character of the settlement and with specific historical themes.

Churches and a stone watermill

The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin is considered the oldest church in Nestório and dates from 1816. The Church of the Archangels is a three-aisled basilica dating from 1858; its furnishings include a carved wooden iconostasis. The architectural term “three-aisled” describes the division of a basilica into three aisles and makes a specific building form tangible. This gives you different points of interest to choose from: the age of the Church of the Dormition or the basilica form and iconostasis of the Church of the Archangels.

The Seréni watermill offers a different emphasis: the stone building dates from the 19th century and complements the churches with an example of mill construction. The building types mentioned thus range from religious architecture to watermill construction; all three buildings date from the 19th century.

Cave and walk

The Cave of Lamia is on Kastro Hill above the present-day settlement and can be reached by a paved path. The cave adds a hilltop destination to the architectural highlights; the paved approach is a practical part of planning your visit. By contrast, the walk through the red-roofed settlement takes you through the town itself. If you want to choose between a view of the settlement and an individual destination above the town, these activities offer two different perspectives on Nestório.

Museum and culture in the surrounding area

The EAM-ELAS-DSE Museum in Nestório contains archival and photographic materials about DSE activities during the Greek Civil War. Its focus is mainly on the Grammos region, but extends beyond it as well. This adds a historical perspective to the architectural themes: the focus is on DSE activities and their regional context.

Nearby, the Grammos Festival brings together music, theatre, and outdoor activities on the slopes of Grammos. River Party is a summer music festival by the river near Nestório. The events have different profiles: in addition to music, the Grammos Festival also features theatre and outdoor activities. If you want to plan your trip around either festival, check the exact dates in advance.
