Western Macedonia brings together a range of discoveries: lakes and wetlands shape the landscape around Prespa, while museums, monuments and geological features elsewhere offer glimpses into the region’s history. Regional products and tastings also give a trip its own focus.
Prespa: Trails, Water and Historic Traces
The Prespa Lakes are among Europe’s most ecologically valuable wetlands. Prespa National Park is part of the first transboundary protected area in the Balkans. Hiking trails wind through forests and along the lakes. Organized boat trips from Psarades offer a different perspective, crossing Great Prespa Lake to hermitages and Byzantine rock paintings.
A visit focused on cultural history is another of Prespa’s attractions. The floating bridge to the island of Agios Achilleios leads to the ruins of a three-aisled basilica dating from the 10th century. Hiking trails through forests and along the lakes thus complement boat trips to the hermitages and rock paintings, offering different ways to explore the region.
Canoe trips on calm waters are available on Lake Zazari in Amyntaio. Along the way, you can enjoy views of cormorants, pelicans, mountains and forests. Those interested in water activities can choose between the landscape around Lake Zazari and the organized boat trips from Psarades: each of these experiences combines the water with a different setting.
Geology and Outdoor Activities
The Grevena–Kozani Geopark has been part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network since 2021. It contains the oldest dated rocks in Greece, estimated to be around one billion years old. The geopark offers educational activities, guided field visits and experiential programs year-round. The geology can therefore be explored not only through the rocks themselves, but also through activities in the field.
Those interested in outdoor activities will find other options, too. Vasilitsa Mountain Bike Park has two designated trails; check the latest trail details before setting out. The Tranos Lakkos mountain hiking trail in the Platanorevma area near Servia passes through gorges and by streams and natural waterfalls. Trail conditions may change after weather events. The Vasilitsa National Ski Center is accessible via the Egnatia Motorway; in winter, driving conditions may affect the journey.
Monuments and Collections
The Byzantine castle town of Servia can be explored as an open-air museum along a paved path beside the Byzantine walls. In Nymfaio, the Church of Agios Nikolaos is a significant post-Byzantine monument. Kastoria is known as a destination with Byzantine monuments and historic mansions above Lake Orestiada. Lake Kastoria, also called Lake Orestiada, is Greece’s seventh-largest natural lake; the Kastoria Aquarium is the largest freshwater aquarium in the Balkans.
The museums showcase different aspects of the cultural heritage. The Lechovo Georgios Gorantis Ethnological and Folklore Museum displays historical documents, tools, textiles, stone artifacts, traditional costumes and household items. Check the latest visitor arrangements before your visit.
Since 2000, the house in Nymfaio has been home to the Museum of Silversmithing, Folklore and History. Its extensive collection includes tools and examples of traditional silversmithing. In Aiani, meanwhile, the Royal Necropolis includes twelve monumental chamber tombs. The collections and archaeological sites thus offer different perspectives, from craft knowledge and everyday objects to monumental burial structures.
The ARCTUROS Bear Information Center is housed in the historic Nikeios School in Nymfaio. At the ARCTUROS Bear Sanctuary, rescued bears can be observed in a fenced habitat covering 50 acres. The ARCTUROS Wolf and Lynx Sanctuary near Agrapidies is set in a 70-acre oak forest.
Wine and Regional Products
In Amyntaio, wineries welcome visitors for tastings and tours focused on Xinomavro vineyards and the PDO wine tradition. Florina peppers, cheese and pies are served as regional specialties at wine tastings. In Prespa, beans are a locally produced product with a protected geographical indication.
Near Servia, a farm offers olive picking and guided tastings during the harvest season. Harvest timing varies from year to year. In Lefkara, a local dairy hosts tastings of feta, graviera, goat cheese and yogurt; opportunities to take part may vary.
When looking for a hotel in Western Macedonia, you can start by sorting your interests—for example, culture and history, trails and landscapes, or regional tastings. This lets you choose a focus for your trip without setting a fixed order for the different experiences.
