One path passes close to the town’s monuments and climbs to a viewpoint overlooking the harbor and sea; others lead to ancient fortifications or the landscape above the Blue Cave. Kastellorizon lies at the easternmost end of Greece and is part of the Dodecanese. The paths and cultural sites offer different highlights—a useful basis for planning excursions around your own interests.

Museums, Castle and Harbor Architecture

The Diachronic Museum of Kastellorizo is housed in part of the medieval Castle of Agios Nikolaos. Its collections include archaeological, Byzantine and folk art exhibits. The museum known as Konaki is also housed in historic structures: a surviving tower and bastion of the Red Castle. A well-preserved Lycian rock-cut tomb also lies below the Castle of Kastellorizo.

The Knights Hospitaller built Castello Rosso above the harbor. Double walls and battlements define the complex. By the water, colorful two- and three-story Neoclassical houses frame the harbor. The island thus brings together different forms of architectural heritage: medieval fortifications, museum spaces in historic structures and the architecture of the harbor front. The Italian film “Mediterraneo,” which won an Oscar, was filmed on Kastellorizo in 1991.

Walks and Hiking Trails

The Village Walk is a good way to see the settlement’s monuments: it passes close to them, includes museum visits and reaches an elevated point with views of the harbor and sea. Those particularly interested in archaeology can take the Paleokastro Trail, which follows a different route. It leads to the ruins of the ancient acropolis of Kastellorizo, including defensive walls and ancient cisterns. Paleokastro itself is an ancient fortified site west of the town.

Another option is the Aghios Georgios Trail, with a paved path and 400 stone steps. The Monastery and Fortress of Saint George of the Mountain were built in 1759. The route descriptions make their different highlights clear: the Village Walk connects the town’s monuments and museums with a viewpoint; Paleokastro focuses on an ancient site; and the steep flight of steps and historic structure are defining features of the Aghios Georgios Trail. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Kastellorizo Trails is the island’s official hiking network and a project of the Municipality of Megisti. It includes 13 marked routes with a total length of about 30 kilometers; marking work was completed in 2026. The selection therefore extends beyond individual walks around town. When choosing a route, the main considerations are the destinations and trail features described—not a walking time that is not provided here.

Blue Trail, Sea and Island Nature

The Blue Trail passes above the Blue Cave and crosses a relatively unspoiled area considered to be of outstanding natural beauty. Along the way, hikers encounter ancient wine presses carved into the rock. The Blue Cave itself is a well-known sea cave with striking reflections of light. At the rocks and small landing places, jumping or diving into the deep blue water offers another activity distinct from hiking. Traditional paths also provide opportunities for walks.

Festivals and Getting There

Numerous festivals and celebrations take place on Kastellorizo every year, mostly for religious occasions. Dancing, singing and feasting are among the traditions described. At the Feast of Prophet Elias on July 20, islanders have a custom of going into the sea fully dressed. If you would like to include a festival in your travel plans, check the dates before your trip.

The flight route to Kastellorizo Airport goes via Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) and Rhodes Airport; the stated travel time is five hours and 27 minutes. Check the connection again before your trip. On the island, the varied trails and cultural sites provide a practical framework for planning your days, without requiring you to combine every destination into one walk.
