A four-kilometer-long city wall surrounds the medieval city of Rhodes. On the island, these reminders of the past meet archaeological walks, seasonal nature experiences, and regional cuisine. You can shape your discoveries around the topics that interest you most.

Medieval Heritage and Museum

The medieval city of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of its outstanding sights is the Street of the Knights, one of the most significant examples of Gothic urban architecture. The city wall and the street offer different impressions: here, the focus is on the enclosed historic urban setting; there, on the distinctive architecture of a single street.

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in a medieval building that was used as the Hospital of the Knights and is also known as the Knights Hospitaller. In the main exhibition, you can see finds from Ialissos and Kamiros. The renovated historic courtyard also displays mosaic floors from Hellenistic villas. A visit to the museum therefore combines archaeological finds from two places with an insight into the building’s former use and an exhibition in the courtyard.

Ancient Remains and Seasonal Nature

The Acropolis of Rhodes preserves important antiquities in an archaeological park suited to archaeological and ecological walks. Visitors can also see the restored ancient Stadium of Diagoras there. Those interested in ancient sites will find both preserved antiquities and a specific structure that can be recognized as a stadium.

The Valley of the Butterflies offers a different nature experience. The route there is 1,300 meters long and ends at the Holy Monastery of Panagia Kalopetra. In summer, from early June to mid-September, thousands of Panaxia quadripunctaria butterflies live in the valley. This timing is important for planning: the butterflies are a seasonal attraction, while the medieval buildings and museum offer other focuses for your discoveries.

Water, Wind, and Local Cuisine

Prasonisi is suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing; conditions are seasonal. Near the Kallithea Springs, visitors can swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean, although local conditions may vary. Lindos is on the southeast coast of Rhodes. At Lindos Beach, a guidance system in the sea and on the shore is available for visitors with visual impairments. If this is important for your plans, check its current operating status before you travel.

Melekouni (μελεκούνι) is another culinary discovery in Rhodes. This traditional sweet is made with honey, sesame, and almonds and flavored with grated orange or bergamot peel and spices. Its ingredients give the confection its own distinctive character and make it a specific regional specialty to look out for as you explore the island.
