Fanes can be explored through several specific attractions: the long sandy beach on the west side, the small harbour and cultural events throughout the year. The beach also offers shallow water and tamarisk trees for shade; windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular there too. The Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour adds a small building with clearly defined architectural features to the description of the village. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can weigh up whether the coast, water sports or a festival date should shape your stay.

Beach and water sports

The long sandy beach stretches along the west side of Fanes; at one end is a picturesque fishing harbour. The beach is secluded and has shallow water; tamarisk trees provide shade. There are no parasols or sun loungers on the beach; check what is available locally before relying on these facilities.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing are very popular at Fanes beach, where there are two windsurfing and kitesurfing schools. If either sport is a deciding factor for you, check in advance whether the schools will be operating during your travel dates.

Chapel and festival calendar

The Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Fanes is located on the Ialysos–Kattavia provincial road. It is a small, single-nave building with a barrel vault. The two terms describe different architectural features: “single-nave” refers to the layout with one main nave, while “barrel vault” refers to the arched ceiling. This describes the chapel in terms of its size, basic layout and ceiling shape. For anyone interested in architecture, these terms are more informative than simply mentioning the name of the building.

Every year, pilgrims from across the island come to celebrate at the chapel. The feast day is 6 August, and the celebration takes place on the eve. If you want to travel for the celebration, check the exact date: the feast day and the celebration fall on different days.

Cultural heritage and grape harvest festival

The former C.A.I.R. factory in Fanes has been converted into a centre for agricultural heritage. This gives it a different cultural context from the chapel: the focus here is agricultural heritage, while the chapel is notable for its sacred architecture. The Fanes grape harvest festival is held every September at the former factory; visitors can take part in grape stomping. If you want to travel for the festival, check the exact dates. The chapel festival and the grape harvest festival mark different points in the seasonal calendar: one is associated with August, the other with September.

Fanes and the surrounding area

A few kilometres south of Fanes are the archaeological site of Ancient Kameiros and its associated harbour. This is a different location from the picturesque fishing harbour at the end of Fanes beach: the fishing harbour is part of the village’s coastal landscape, while the other harbour belongs to the archaeological site to the south. It is worth distinguishing between them when planning, if you want to list beach and cultural sites separately. This keeps the harbour at Fanes beach clearly distinguished from the harbour associated with the Ancient Kameiros site.
