Archángelos brings together religious architecture, a pottery tradition and the fertile Ethonas Plain. The area of the Seven Springs, with its lake and the birds found there, is also close to the village. This offers a range of themes to explore: churches and religious art on the one hand, and landscapes on the other. Archangelos Castle and its chapel add another historical theme to the area’s cultural picture.

Churches, Art and Pottery Tradition

Archángelos has a tradition of pottery. Another way to explore the village’s history is the Folklore Museum, housed in a traditional home dating from the 1860s. The building itself gives the museum a tangible connection to 19th-century architectural history, while pottery draws attention to a traditional craft. Together with the churches, these offer a varied picture of local culture.

The bell tower of the Taxiarchis Church, dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, was built in the 19th century and is the tallest building in Archángelos. The Church of the Archangel Michael is a three-aisled cross-shaped basilica. Its wood-carved iconostasis was made between 1856 and 1859. The narthex has a pebble floor dating from 1885; the religious artworks also include two oversized icons of the Archangel Michael.

The Church of Agios Ioannis o Prodromos, dedicated to John the Baptist, is also associated with remarkable religious paintings from the 14th century. Another aspect of the religious tradition is the Feast of the Archangel Michael on November 8: after the Divine Liturgy, a procession takes place with the icon of the Archangel. The Metropolitan takes part, and the procession is accompanied by the Philharmonic and the local community.

The dates span from the 14th-century paintings to architectural and decorative details from the 19th century. This comparison across time helps you see the churches as more than a single historical layer: the art, architectural forms and furnishings each have their own points of reference.

Plain, Springs and Castle

The Ethonas Plain, as the Archángelos Plain is known, is one of the most fertile plains on Rhodes. The area of the Seven Springs near Archángelos offers a different connection to the landscape. There is a lake there, fed by seven springs. Geese, ducks and peacocks can be seen at the lake. Thus, a named plain and a spring area with a lake and birdlife offer distinct landscape themes.

Archangelos Castle stands on a hill east of the Church of the Archangel Michael. It includes the 15th-century Chapel of Saint George. Alongside the churches, the castle and chapel offer another historical perspective on the sights to explore.

Cultural and Landscape Highlights

If you are particularly interested in sacred art, the churches offer a range of points of interest: the three-aisled cross-shaped basilica, the iconostasis and the pebble floor, as well as the 14th-century paintings. The pottery tradition and Folklore Museum add crafts and architectural history to these highlights. If you would also like to explore the landscape, you can visit Ethonas and the nearby area of the Seven Springs. The castle and chapel add another historical highlight. This allows you to shape your stay in Archángelos around culture and landscape.
