Drios on the southeast coast of Paros

Drios stretches along the southeast coast of Paros, between low-growing vegetation and cultivated land. The coastline and farmland thus define two sides of the area. Drios Beach lies in front of the village and is a narrow strip of sand with small pebbles, several hundred metres long. The water is clear; conditions can vary. If you are looking for a hotel in Drios, you can first decide whether the beach, landscape or history of Paros should be the focus of your stay.

Coastal Hike and Village Beach

The Logara–Pounta–Mesada–Tserdakia–Chryssi Akti–Drios coastal hike leads to Drios. It is 7 kilometres long and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Its length and duration make the hike easy to fit into a schedule. If you would like to include hiking and the beach in your travel plans, set aside a dedicated time slot for the route and treat the narrow sandy beach as a separate focus. This way, you can plan for time spent walking along the coast and time at the beach separately.

Ancient Traces and Nature Around Drios

Drios was the ancient harbour of Paros. Nearby are ancient ship sheds, which served as shelters for ships in antiquity. The history of the harbour is part of the village itself; the ship sheds are in the surrounding area.

The landscape around Drios also has several facets. The Cave of the Demons, with its stalactites and stalagmites, is nearby. The Drios Lakes are also in the surrounding area, and there are several small and larger sandy beaches close to the village. Cave formations, lakes and sandy coastline thus offer distinct aspects of nature.

Culture and Nature on Paros

On Paros, northeast of Parikia and near the harbour, stands Panagia Ekatontapiliani, one of Greece’s most important early Christian monuments. In the southern part of the church is the ancient baptistery, dating from the 4th century; it is considered the oldest and best-preserved baptistery in the Orthodox East. Ekatontapiliani also houses the Byzantine Museum of Parikia. Its collections include rare icons, wood carvings and other religious relics from the Byzantine era and the period of Ottoman rule.

The Paros Environmental and Cultural Park has a 7-kilometre network of walking trails and both organised and undeveloped beaches. The park also has a 700-seat amphitheatre for concerts and performances. Since 2009, the Environmental and Cultural Park of the Municipality of Paros has held the “Festival at the Park”, a summer programme of cultural, sporting and environmental events. The Alyki Cultural Festival on Paros takes place every year in June, lasts three days and includes events in Alyki. If you are planning your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.
