On Paros, early Christian architecture, churches and museums sit alongside natural attractions and events. A prominent cultural landmark is Panagia Ekatontapiliani in Parikia: in the southern part of the church is a baptistery dating from the 4th century. Other highlights include the remains of a Venetian castle, museums with varied themes and trails through natural areas—starting points for planning your trip around your own interests.
Early Christian Architecture and Ancient Traces
Panagia Ekatontapiliani is in northeastern Parikia, near the port, and is one of Greece’s most significant early Christian monuments. Its baptistery dates from the 4th century and is considered the oldest and best-preserved baptistery in the Orthodox East. The church also houses the Byzantine Museum of Parikia. Its collection includes rare icons, wood carvings and other religious relics from the Byzantine era and the period of Ottoman rule.
The Kastro of Parikia preserves the ruins of a Venetian castle built using columns from ancient temples and other architectural elements. The Asklepion is also near Parikia: its ruins include a temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, and are located on Agia Anna Hill. An ancient sculpture workshop is near Floga, southeast of Paros town, about 160 metres west of the ancient city wall of Paros. These sites offer different perspectives—from reused building materials to ancient places of worship and craft.
Churches and Museums in Different Towns
In Lefkes, Agia Triada is a listed church building dating from 1835, built from Parian marble. The three-aisled basilica has a raised central nave and two bell towers. Another historic landmark is the country church of Agios Georgios Thalassitis between the port and Logaras. It was built in the 14th century and has the oldest frescoes on the island.
The museums also cover a range of subjects. The Sculpture Museum of sculptor and engraver N. Peratinos in Marpissa displays 192 of his works. The B. Skiadas Museum of Cycladic Folklore is dedicated to the history and traditions of Paros and the Aegean. In Naoussa, the Folklore Museum displays the collection of Doctor Othon Kaparis; it also includes a library, an extensive photo archive and several archaeological finds. The selection ranges from sculpture and island history to collections combining folklore and archaeology.
Events and Trails Through Marpissa and Alyki
The Alyki Cultural Festival takes place in June, lasts three days and features events in Alyki on Paros. “Routes in Marpissa” is also a three-day cultural festival, but it is based around themed trails through traditional settlements: events take place along these trails during the festivities. If you are planning your trip around a festival, check the dates and programme for your intended stay.
Another programme is offered by the Municipality of Paros Environmental and Cultural Park. Since 2009, it has hosted “Festival at the Park”, a summer programme of cultural, sporting and environmental events in the park. The festivals offer different experiences: Alyki has an annual event in June, while the description of “Routes in Marpissa” highlights its three-day trail and event format.
Nature, Beaches and Outdoor Activities
The Paros Environmental and Cultural Park has a seven-kilometre network of hiking trails, a 700-seat amphitheatre for concerts and performances, and both organised and natural beaches. It brings trails, an event venue and coastal areas together in one place. The Valley of the Butterflies on Paros is a rare habitat for Jersey tiger moths, which can be seen there in large numbers on tree trunks.
Aliki is the island’s most important wetland. Walking tours, nature walks and cycling tours are organised there for international visitors. The water at Monastiri Beach is shallow; the beach is organised and suitable for families, as children can play in the shallow water. Windsurfing is possible at Santa Maria, Chryssi Akti, Tsoukalia, Kolybithres and Pounta. Windsurfing schools offer equipment and lessons; if you have a particular school in mind, check its current offerings at the location.
The Yacht Club of Paros also adds to the range of activities: based in Livadia near Parikia, it has been operating since 1992 and offers swimming, triangular dinghy regattas in open water, beach volleyball and racquetball. Paros lies in the heart of the Cyclades, and organised day trips to nearby islands and beaches are offered from the island. Check specific dates if you would like to include such a trip in your plans.
Choose Hotels Based on Your Planned Experiences
If you want to focus on churches, ancient sites and collections, you can plan visits to Parikia, Lefkes, Marpissa or Naoussa. For outdoor days, consider the Environmental and Cultural Park’s trail network, the Aliki wetland, time at the beach or windsurfing. Compare each accommodation’s location with your own plans and choose a hotel that suits the trip you have in mind.
