If you include historic buildings in your travel plans, Stavropigio offers a specific cultural focus: the village is home to the two-aisled, cross-vaulted Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas. Nearby is Zarnata Castle. These two buildings offer different perspectives on sacred architecture and the history of fortifications.

Church Architecture in Stavropigio

The Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas has two aisles and a cross vault; it is also decorated with several layers of frescoes. “Two-aisled” describes a church interior with two aisles. In a cross vault, vaulted surfaces meet. These terms describe different aspects of the building: its spatial layout and the shape of its vault. The layers of frescoes add painted decoration to this architecture. The bell tower dates from 1810. This date refers to the tower; it is a separate point in time alongside the church’s architectural and artistic features.

Zarnata Castle and Its History

Zarnata Castle stands on a low hill between the settlements of Kambos and StavropĂgion. Its location allowed the coastline to be observed and the routes into the Mani hinterland to be controlled. The castle is probably dated to the first half of the 15th century. In 1670, the Ottomans captured and rebuilt it; this reconstruction gave it its present appearance. The castle wall survives in sections, follows the terrain and the line of the ancient fortification, and is more than three metres high in many places. The location, course of the wall, and reconstruction give the site distinct historical and architectural layers.

Zoodochos Pigi Within the Castle

The cross-vaulted Church of Zoodochos Pigi stands within Zarnata Castle. It was built in 1780 and decorated with frescoes in 1787. Construction and decoration took place at different times: the first date refers to the building of the church, the second to its frescoes. Together with the church in the village, it provides a specific comparison of sacred buildings. Both have cross vaults; the Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas has two aisles and a bell tower dating from 1810, while Zoodochos Pigi is located within the castle and is associated with the years 1780 and 1787.

When choosing your destination, the distinction in location is useful: the Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas is in Stavropigio, while Zarnata Castle is nearby, between Kambos and StavropĂgion. This makes it possible to consider the village church and the castle complex as distinct cultural points of interest, without treating them as a single site. If architecture and history are among your main interests, Stavropigio offers both a sacred building in the village and the history of a fortification in the surrounding area.
