Sofiana combines a mountain landscape with a rich local history and a named mountain route. Those choosing a destination for its scenery and history will find several different points of interest here: its elevation on the slopes of the Mavro Mountains, old wells, churches with their own historical connections, and local festival traditions.

Mountain Setting and Water

Sofiana lies at an altitude of 850 metres on the slopes of the Mavro Mountains, also known as Mavriorous. Its setting is characterised by greenery and numerous springs. The village also has old wells with running water. Springs on the slopes and wells in the village offer different points of interest: the former are part of the landscape, while the latter are specific features of the village. This makes it possible to appreciate Sofiana both through its surroundings and through individual features within the village.

Local History and Churches

In 1700, during Venetian rule, Sofiana was a settlement of what is now Gelini. This connection adds a specific settlement history to the perspective of the landscape.

The Church of Agioi Anargyroi in Sofiana was built on the initiative of the teacher Soufras. The Chapel of Agia Paraskevi was completely renovated in the early 1990s, with the village covering the cost. The two stories differ in emphasis: at Agioi Anargyroi, the focus is on the initiative of a named individual; at Agia Paraskevi, it is on a renovation funded by the village. Together, they reflect both a personal impetus for construction and a community-funded contribution to the history of the place.

According to the oral tradition of Sofiana’s residents, the former Church of Agios Georgios stood in a different location during the Ottoman period. It had steps and was an ancient structure that no longer exists today.

These historical connections span different periods: the year 1700 links the settlement’s history to Venetian rule, while local tradition about the Church of Agios Georgios reaches back to the Ottoman period. Together, dated local history and local memory offer two different ways of approaching Sofiana’s past.

Getting There and the Mountain Route

You can reach Sofiana via the road from Xylokastro to Trikala; follow the signposts. The fifth mountain route of the Municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostina also passes through Gelini, Sofiana and Rethi. The two details serve different purposes: the road indicates how to access Sofiana, while the mountain route lists the village as part of a named sequence that also includes Gelini and Rethi. Check local conditions before travelling, as road conditions can change.

The name Gelini also appears in two different contexts: in 1700, during Venetian rule, Sofiana was a settlement of what is now Gelini; the fifth mountain route passes through Gelini, Sofiana and Rethi. The same place name thus appears once in a historical settlement connection and once in a route sequence.

Village Festivals

Sofiana’s cultural association organises village festivals. If a festival is part of your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance so you can schedule your stay accordingly.
