A 3.5-kilometre central beach, windsurfing in summer and winter, churches and thermal connections give Loutráki a range of themes for a stay. The town’s history as a popular tourist destination dates back to the 1930s. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether you are mainly interested in the coast, religious heritage, thermal history or archaeological sites. These interests can be considered separately when planning, without limiting your stay to a single attraction.
Getting there and choosing an area
KTEL intercity buses connect Loutráki with Athens, Corinth and nearby towns. If you plan to travel by bus, check the operator’s latest information before your trip: routes and timetables may change. Connections with these places are one specific aspect to consider when deciding on Loutráki; no particular journey time or onward connection is implied.
Your interests for the stay can also help guide your choice. The coast is a defining part of the town’s character, while churches, thermal connections and archaeological sites add further cultural themes.
Beach and windsurfing
Loutráki’s central beach is 3.5 kilometres long. It stretches from the Corinth Canal to Loutráki’s coastal park. These two endpoints give the coastline a clearly defined extent. The beach is pebbly; you can swim and sunbathe here. Conditions and facilities may vary, so it is worth keeping them in mind when planning your own beach visit.
Windsurfing is popular at the beach in both summer and winter. This means the beach is not associated only with summer swimming: when planning your visit, you can also take into account the specific mention of windsurfing in winter. Whether you choose a stay focused on swimming and sunbathing or one that includes windsurfing depends on your interests; current conditions may vary.
Churches, an icon and thermal history
The churches in Loutráki include Agios Ioannis and Agios Fanourios. The Holy Church of Panagia Giatrissa stands in the town centre and houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. The Byzantine Church of St. Andrew adds to this selection of religious sites. Those interested in sacred architecture will find several named churches here, while Panagia Giatrissa also stands out for its central location and the icon associated with it.
Loutráki is also shaped by its thermal waters. The LOUTRAKI THERMAL SPA is located in the town, on the northern bay of the Gulf of Corinth. In antiquity, Loutráki’s thermal waters were known as “Thermae”; the town’s name is traced to thermal baths above the thermal springs.
Saint Giatrissa is also associated with an annual festival: Loutráki celebrates the miraculous icon for three days starting on 8 September. This recurring date offers a distinct cultural connection during the year. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the specific event dates.
Archaeological sites in the wider municipal area
The Heraion of Perachora is another archaeological point of interest in the wider region. The remains include an unusually designed temple of Hera, an L-shaped stoa, a large cistern, dining rooms and traces of a possible second temple. The unusual layout is associated with the 6th century BC. The possible second temple remains a possibility, not a confirmed additional temple.
Another archaeological point of interest is the Roman Villa in the Katounristra area, a few kilometres from Loutráki. It is still being excavated. For orientation, it is helpful to consider this site as a nearby archaeological point of interest, separate from the churches and facilities in Loutráki itself.
A quieter view of the water
At the artificial Loutráki waterfalls, you can relax, listen to the water and look out to sea; a coffee or drink brought along can accompany your break. This offers a different way to spend time by the water than at the pebbly beach: here, the sound of the water and the sea view take centre stage.
