Vivari offers several distinct ways to enjoy a stay: small beach coves, walks around the lagoon, the history of a natural harbour, churches and fish tavernas by the water. When planning, you can choose between landscape, nature, culture and food. Would you mainly like to spend time at the beach, walk around the lagoon, learn about the area’s history or plan a meal featuring fish and seafood?
Beach and Lagoon
A beach runs parallel to the road towards Kandia and Iria, with small coves and clear water. If you want to focus your stay on the sea, you can treat the beach and coves as a distinct priority. The specific direction and the small coves give this stretch of coast a clear geographical and scenic character.
The Vivari Lagoon offers a different way to experience the landscape: visitors can walk around it. It stretches between Vivari and Drepano, is a protected biodiversity area and serves, among other things, as a refuge for herons and cormorants. This brings together two aspects of nature: the coast with its small coves and the protected lagoon. If you want to balance different landscape experiences in your travel plans, you can treat the beach and the walk as separate priorities.
Harbour and Churches
The natural harbour is also a historical point of interest. During Venetian rule, it served as a naval base and shipyard. These terms refer to two different functions: military use and shipbuilding. Anyone interested in local history will find a specific historical and functional connection to the harbour’s past here.
Profitis Ilias is in the centre of Vivari. Panagia Lefka is also one of the village’s churches and stands on higher ground, offering a special view. Zoodochos Pigi is another of Vivari’s churches. Their locations therefore differ: Profitis Ilias is in the centre, while Panagia Lefka stands out for its elevated position and view.
Festival, Chapel and Food
The traditional Feast of the Prophet Elias takes place in Vivari every year on 20 July. If you want to plan your trip around this occasion, check the current programme in advance.
Just outside Vivari, on the edge of Kondili Beach, stands the chapel of Agios Nikolaos with its lighthouse. It is part of the area around the destination, while Profitis Ilias is in the village centre. This distinction helps place the cultural points of interest geographically: a church in the centre and a chapel on Kondili Beach.
There are fish tavernas by the water serving fresh fish and seafood. If you enjoy these dishes, you can make the tavernas a separate culinary priority; they complement the beach, lagoon and history with a specific dining option.
