At Makryammos Beach, silvery sand meets shallow emerald waters. A small island lies at the edge of the bay, and the seabed is full of shells. Elsewhere on Thasos, things to discover range from hiking trails to archaeological sites and museums. When planning your trip, you can give beach activities and island culture separate priorities.
Beach and Sports at Makryammos Beach
The resort offers water skiing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and pedal boats at the beach. These activities are offered by the resort. The beach also has sports facilities, including tennis, basketball and beach volleyball courts. Water sports and a range of ball sports are therefore among the activities available around Makryammos Beach.
At the resort’s Mini Club, children can take part in the Little Cormorant programme. A team of professionals accompanies them as they explore the sea, meet deer and peacocks, discover flowers in the gardens and collect fragrant herbs in the greenhouse. The programme combines exploring the sea with nature observation and activities in the garden and greenhouse.
Hiking Trails and Views on Thasos
Thasos has numerous walking paths for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. There are also hiking trails for all ages and fitness levels; trail conditions can vary seasonally. If you plan a hike, check the conditions before setting out. From the 1,204-metre summit of Ipsarion, you can enjoy views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach; visibility depends on the weather.
A trail with a historical focus is also described on Thasos: the historic Limenas trail is 3.5 kilometres long and passes through the ancient city, on the site of which Limenas was built. Routes and trail conditions can change, so it is worth checking the latest local information before setting out.
Archaeology and the Island’s History
The archaeological site of Aliki on Thasos is next to Aliki Beach in the southeast of the island. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating to the 5th century AD. Marble was quarried and exported from the ancient quarry at Aliki from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times.
The ancient Agora was the political, social, religious and economic centre of ancient Thasos. The ancient theatre hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; programme details may vary. Thasos’s museums also preserve different historical perspectives: the Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artefacts from the Palaeolithic, Roman and Byzantine periods. The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia houses 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis.
Further insights can be found at the Hatzigeorgis Mansion in Theologos, which was converted into a folklore museum featuring everyday tools and utensils, as well as a depiction of a traditional Thassian village house, and at Palataki. Palataki was built in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company that operated on Thasos until 1963. Local food culture has its own distinctive connection to the island: Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil.
