On Thasos, archaeological remains, mountain trails and regional traditions sit side by side—from the ancient quarry at Aliki to the olives of Panagia. Exploring the island brings you into contact not only with individual attractions, but also with different chapters of its history: religious sites, public centers and traces of mining.

Aliki: Temples, Basilicas and Marble

In southeastern Thasos, the archaeological site of Aliki lies next to the beach of the same name. Its remains include a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating to the 5th century AD. At this site, evidence from different religious eras comes together.

The ancient quarry at Aliki also tells the story of a long history of marble use: marble was extracted and exported there from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times. Together, the temple remains, basilicas and quarry offer insight into the site's different historical connections.

Ancient Thasos and Later Traces

In Limenas, the 3.5-kilometer historical trail passes through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site modern-day Limenas was built. Conditions on the route may change; check the current trail conditions before setting out. The ancient Agora was once the city's political, social, religious and economic center. The ancient theater is the venue for the annual Ancient Drama Festival; program details may vary.

The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artifacts from the Paleolithic period as well as from the Roman and Byzantine eras. A different collection awaits you at the Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia, which displays 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. The two museums focus on different periods, from early finds to the works of a single artist.

The villages of Theologos and Limenaria also preserve evidence of more recent history. The Hatzigeorgis Mansion in Theologos houses a folklore museum with everyday tools and equipment, as well as a depiction of a traditional Thassian village house. The stone bridge in Theologos dates to 1917. It was once important for residents seeking to reach the coastal settlement of Astrida during heavy rainfall. In Limenaria, Palataki was built in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company that operated on Thasos until 1963.

Hiking Trails, Peaks and Waterfalls

Thasos has numerous walking trails for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. The options include trails for all age groups and fitness levels; conditions may vary seasonally. The trail from Limenas combines exercise with a route through the ancient city, while the 1,204-meter summit of Ipsarion offers views of the coastal settlement of Skala Potamia and Golden Beach. Visibility of these places depends on the weather.

You can also take a hiking trail to the Kefalogourna waterfalls. These examples offer different starting points for choosing your activities: historical trails, a mountain peak with named viewpoints, and a route leading to a waterfall.

Olive Culture, the Sea and Summer Traditions

Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. In Panagia, the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum is housed in a traditional olive press. It operated from 1915 to 2007 and was then converted into a working museum. This reflects olive culture both as a regional product tradition and as a place with its own industrial history.

Scuba diving is possible at Pefkari; local providers and conditions may vary. Boat trips from Thasos go to the island's most secluded beaches, with routes and providers varying. In summer, festivals called Kazavitiana are held at a theater near Mikro Kazaviti; dates may vary. A traditional Thassian wedding is also reenacted in late August. Dates for this event may vary too.

Getting There by Ferry

Regular ferries run between Keramoti and Limenas; the crossing takes about 40 minutes. The crossing on the Kavala–Prinos route takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. These approximate journey times help you compare the routes mentioned. Check the timetable before traveling, as times may change.
