The coast of Skala Rachoniou combines fine white sand, several coves and clear, shallow sea with a fertile plain where olive trees grow.

Coastline and beach profile

Skala Rachoniou Beach has sandy and rocky sections. Small country roads run through the olive groves and often lead to small coves with fine sandy beaches. This means that different shoreline profiles meet along the coast: the named beach and the small coves are not the same.

Water sports, parties and local cuisine

Organized beaches offer water skiing and paragliding. The activities differ: water skiing takes place on the water, while paragliding takes place in the air. Providers and availability may vary; check in advance whether the activity you want is available during your stay.

Beach bars host parties during the day and in the evening. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the latest dates.

Fresh fish and other local specialties are among the offerings at hotels and tavernas in Skala Rachoniou. The selection at individual establishments may vary; if you are looking for a particular dish, check the current menu.

On Thasos: routes, getting there and culture

Regular ferries operate between Keramoti and Limenas on Thasos; the crossing takes about 40 minutes. There are also regular ferry services between Kavala and Prinos, with a crossing time of about 1 hour and 20 minutes. These times are approximate. Check the schedule before you travel. The difference between the two approximate crossing times can help with planning.

Thasos offers numerous walking routes for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. There are trails for all age groups and fitness levels; conditions may vary seasonally. One specific route is the historic path from Limenas: it is 3.5 km long and passes through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The archaeological site of Aliki is in southeast Thasos, beside Aliki Beach. It contains the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. Marble was quarried and exported from the ancient quarry of Aliki from the Archaic period, through the Roman occupation, and into Byzantine times. The ancient agora was the political, social, religious and economic center of ancient Thasos. The island is also known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. The ancient theater of Thasos is the venue for the annual ancient drama festival; program details may vary.
