Ferries from Kavala arrive at the port of Skala Prinou; ferries from Keramoti reach the port of Limenas. These different arrival points provide a first orientation for your trip to Thasos. Skala Prinou has many hotels, rooms to rent and restaurants that remain open throughout the summer season.

Arrivals and summer operations

Ferries run regularly between Keramoti and Limenas on Thasos; the crossing takes about 40 minutes. The crossing between Kavala and Prinos takes about one hour and 20 minutes. Both figures are approximate: check the current timetable before departure. Local orientation also distinguishes between arriving in Skala Prinou from Kavala and arriving in Limenas from Keramoti.

During the summer season, Skala Prinou offers a selection of hotels, rooms to rent and restaurants that remain open throughout this period. This is a specific seasonal consideration for planning. When choosing your accommodation, you can also think about which themes you want to shape your stay: arriving at the port, the traditional shipyard, or excursions to Thasos’s cultural and natural areas.

Harbor, coast and history near Skala Prinou

The Olive and Oil Museum is near Ormos Prinou, a 20-minute walk from the port of Skala Prinou. Walking time may vary depending on the route and conditions. The museum is a place where you can learn more about local products. Dasyllio 2 Beach lies on the northwest coast of Thasos, at the western edge of the Gulf of PrĂnos, and faces northwest.

A working traditional shipyard is located on the beach by the port of Skala Prinou. Small and large ships and boats wait there to be repaired. Another perspective on the area comes from its history: the Thasos military airfield in Skala Prinou was used by the Allies during the First World War, from 1916 to 1919. The shipyard and airfield represent two distinct aspects of local history: ship repairs and a clearly defined historical use.

Thasos: trails and culture across the island

Thasos has numerous footpaths for hikes of ecological and cultural interest. The Maries–Prinos route is recommended for hiking or mountain biking. It connects the named places as a route in the wider region; this does not refer to specific trail markers or an exact route within Ormos Prinou. You can also take a hiking trail from the Kefalogourna waterfalls. The island therefore offers different ways to explore, from footpaths to a route recommended for mountain biking.

Thasos’s archaeological sites also offer different historical perspectives. The site of Aliki is in the southeast of the island, next to Aliki Beach. It includes the remains of a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. The ancient quarry at Aliki tells a different story: marble was quarried and exported there from the Archaic period through the Roman occupation and into Byzantine times. The ancient Agora, in turn, was the political, social, religious and economic center of ancient Thasos.

The island’s culture is also reflected in its museums and buildings. The Archaeological Museum of Thasos houses artifacts from the Paleolithic period as well as the Roman and Byzantine eras. The Polygnotos Vagis Sculpture Museum in Potamia features 98 sculptures and 15 paintings by Vagis. In Theologos, the Hatzigeorgis mansion was converted into a folklore museum, with everyday tools and implements as well as a display of a traditional Thasian village house. These different focuses help distinguish archaeological finds, art collections and the daily lives of earlier generations.

Olives are also part of the region’s character: Thasos is known for Throuba olives and extra virgin olive oil. In Panagia, the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum is housed in a traditional press that operated from 1915 to 2007 and was then converted into a working museum. Check current opening hours before visiting. This makes it possible to plan a trip that alternates between the harbor and coast at Skala Prinou and Thasos’s hiking, history and culture.
