Those considering Limenária for a stay on Thasos will find several points of interest in the town: mining history at Palataki, art on the beach and the Folklore Museum of Limenaria in the town centre. Limenária is considered the second-largest town on Thasos; this ranking may vary depending on the population measure used. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether you are mainly looking for local history and beach-related attractions or would also like to include other cultural destinations on Thasos.

Palataki, mining and more recent art

Palataki is an impressive building with eclectic architecture dating from the early 20th century. It formerly served as the administrative building of the local mines. On Thasos, Palataki was built in 1903 as the headquarters and residence of the German mining company, which operated on the island until 1963. The local history of the building thus intersects with the broader history of mining.

The Mines Beach in Limenária is also associated with abandoned mines. A later milestone is the Crown of Limenária: built in 2005, it consists of twelve white slabs, each engraved with a zodiac sign. The timeline from Palataki to the Crown spans the early 20th century to a work created in 2005.

Town centre and beach

The Folklore Museum of Limenaria is in the town centre. A cave is located below Palataki. These local landmarks are distinct from the experiences by the water and offer further points of interest as you explore Limenária.

A stroll along Limenária Beach offers views of works by sculptor Kostas Lovulos. Traditional loukoumades are available at the town’s pastry shops. Beach art and a local sweet therefore provide different facets of a stay in Limenária.

Metalleia Beach lies just outside Limenária, beyond Palataki. It has white sand, and the surrounding area is covered in black metal. You can reach the beach on foot via the hill where Palataki stands. Check the current condition of the path before visiting.

Other historical sites on Thasos

There are distinct historical points of interest elsewhere on Thasos, too. In the southeast of the island, the Aliki archaeological site lies next to Aliki Beach. The remains include a temple dedicated to Apollo and the ruins of two early Christian basilicas dating from the 5th century AD. Marble was quarried and exported at the ancient quarry of Aliki from the Archaic period, through the Roman occupation, and into Byzantine times. Aliki thus brings together archaeological structures and the history of marble quarrying.

The Limenas historic trail is a 3.5 km route through the ancient city of Thasos, on whose site Limenas was built. Check the current condition of the route before visiting. The Ancient Theatre of Thasos hosts the annual Ancient Drama Festival; the specific programme may vary. The ancient agora was once the political, social, religious and economic centre of ancient Thasos.
