Stilida combines an amphitheatrical setting on the slopes of Mount Othrys with its port and a history that stretches back to ancient Phalara. This offers a range of interests to consider when planning a visit: scenery, time outdoors and archaeological traces. The archaeological traces date back to Roman times.

Hillside Setting, Bay and Regional Landscape

Stilida is built amphitheatrically on the slopes of Mount Othrys. The natural bay of the Maliakos Gulf lies about half a kilometre from Stilida. A walk along Stilida’s beach is a worthwhile outdoor activity in its own right. In the wider travel region, Mount Othrys is known for its many hiking trails. The hillside setting thus characterises the town itself, while the hiking trails are a regional feature of the mountain.

Archaeological Traces and Fortifications

Fragmentary settlement remains from ancient Phalara and graves dating from the Late Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods have been investigated within the boundaries of the present-day town. The finds therefore include both settlement remains and graves from several historical periods. This distinction is helpful for understanding them: the settlement remains relate to ancient Phalara, while the graves are attributed to the periods mentioned.

Parts of the fortifications have been preserved at the site of “Φάλαρα”. Other surviving sections are located at “Αγία Αικατερίνη”, west of Stilida, and “Καλόγερος”, east of Stilida. The history of the fortifications also includes destruction: underwater works at Stilida’s port completely destroyed the eastern structure in the last century. The rubble from the wall foundation at “Νησάκι” is still visible today.

Another archaeological find is located on Kostorizou Street. A Late Roman building complex with bathing facilities dating from the 2nd–4th/5th centuries was investigated there. Unlike the fragmentary settlement remains and the graves, this find is identified as a building complex with bathing facilities. This highlights the different kinds of archaeological traces found in the town’s history.

Leisure in Town

The “Πάρκο του Λαού” park in Stilida is used for recreation and sporting activities. Visitors who would also like to make time for exercise or a break among the greenery will find two clearly defined uses here: sport and recreation. The park thus complements the area’s landscape and historical features with a public place for leisure.

On Stilida’s central square, opposite the port, cafés, ouzeries and small tavernas offer visitors a chance to relax. This is a different focus from the park: the square is associated with places to eat and a break, while the park offers recreation and sporting activities. Together, they provide different ways to spend time in town without requiring a fixed daily itinerary.
