Delphi is one of the most important archaeological sites of the ancient world. According to ancient Greek mythology, the place was once considered the center of the Earth. It is a striking starting point for discovering Central Greece: here, an archaeological site meets a mythological idea that gives Delphi a special role.

Delphi and Cultural Heritage

In Delphi, a contemporary cultural programme also focuses on issues of the present day. The Delphi Dialogues of the European Cultural Delphi Centre address contemporary global challenges from the perspective of Greek philosophy and modern philosophical thought. Another of the centre’s key initiatives is its Theatre Education Programme. It offers training and inspiration to emerging playwrights and theatre practitioners. In this way, philosophical questions and theatre education complement the exploration of the ancient site.

Other places also have their own cultural character. The Monastery of Osios Loukas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an outstanding example of Byzantine art. Galaxidi has captains’ houses and represents maritime grandeur. The comparison brings two distinct themes into focus: Byzantine art on the one hand, and captains’ houses and maritime grandeur on the other.

Peaks, Springs and Waterscapes

At 2,457 metres, Mount Parnassus is the highest peak in Central Greece. The Krya Springs in Livadia offer a different kind of landscape, with flowing water, waterfalls and centuries-old plane trees. Livadia lies at the foot of Mount Helicon. For nature lovers, the two highlights are quite different: one is a mountain peak, the other a spring landscape with waterfalls.

Trizonia is the only inhabited island in the Gulf of Corinth, and there are no cars there. At Messolonghi, history meets the waterscape of Greece’s largest lagoon. Together, these places showcase different landscape themes: the distinctive setting of an island without cars, and the connection between history and lagoon. You can therefore choose what to explore based on the features that interest you most, rather than grouping every place under a single landscape theme.

Activities and Practical Information

Karpenisi is associated with three different activities: rafting on the Tavropos River, hiking in the Panta Vrechi Gorge and visiting the Monastery of Prousos. This comparison can help you decide what you would like to focus your trip on: a river activity, a hike in the gorge or a monastery visit.

The Culture and History Centre of Evrytania in Karpenisi offers a cultural experience of its own. It regularly holds workshops for schools, where children can gain hands-on experience in mosaic-making, engraving and other traditional techniques. The workshops are for schools; dates may vary.

Intercity KTEL buses connect Delphi with Athens, Livadia, Itea and nearby places. If you are planning to travel by bus, check the schedule before your trip.
