Pavliani lies on the slopes of Mount Oiti at an elevation of 1,040 metres. Water and craftsmanship, trails through a nature park and historic architecture give the village a variety of things to see and do. You can plan your trip around whether you would rather explore a route through the landscape, learn about water-powered crafts or discover stone and wood details.

Squares and architecture in Pavliani

A central square in front of a church is shaded by a large plane tree. The benches in the square offer views of the Gulf of Maliakos. In Ano Pavliani, the Church of Saint Athanasios stands beside the square. It features a carved wooden iconostasis and a stone bell tower. The tower’s staircase is also remarkable: as you climb, the overlapping stone steps form a narrow cylinder. You can also visit the stone-built village school between Ano and Kato Pavliani. These places offer different reasons to focus on the squares, architecture and individual details of craftsmanship.

Water and craftsmanship at Potami

Between Ano and Kato Pavliani, at Potami, the water-powered craft park comprises three stone buildings with tiled roofs dedicated to traditional crafts. The Water Power Museum complex is open to visitors. Here, both the buildings’ design and the connection between water power and craftsmanship are central. A water-powered washing facility stands beside the buildings. Local residents and visitors use it to wash their clothes. This shows that water power at this site is not only reflected in the craft park’s focus, but also in a specific everyday use.

A trail to the Asopos springs

A trail through the nature park at the Asopos springs winds among old trees and waterways to the heart of the park. The route highlights a different side of the destination from the craft park: here, the focus is on the trail through the park rather than on buildings and their use. These are two clearly distinct options for planning your day: a nature trail on the one hand, and craft buildings and water-powered activities on the other. The park trail is defined by the features described along it: old trees, waterways and its destination in the heart of the park.

Ancient architectural elements near the present-day village

At the Pyra of Heracles, near the present-day village, column drums, parts of the entablature and triglyphs from a 3rd-century BC prostyle Doric temple have been preserved. These different architectural elements give the visit an archaeological focus and complement Pavliani’s more recent buildings with an ancient perspective. If you would like to combine several themes, the experiences are distinct: stone buildings and water power define a visit to the craft park, while the Pyra is distinguished by the surviving elements of a temple. It is advisable to check current visitor arrangements in advance for the Water Power Museum complex or the village school.
