Delphi: a sanctuary among the rocks
The rocky setting of Delphi offers a striking introduction to Fokida. The pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Apollo lies in the Regional Unit of Phokis in Central Greece, among the imposing rocks of Mount Parnassus known as the Phaidriades. Pilgrims came to Delphi to receive an oracle from the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. The Pythian Games also had specific venues: they were held every four years in the theater and the stadium. Thus, at Delphi, the practice of divination and a recurring festival cycle are connected with two named places.
Museums and maritime history in Galaxidi
The Nautical and Historical Museum of Galaxidi documents the lives and maritime activities of the local population over 5,000 years, from prehistory to the beginning of the 20th century. The Archaeological Collection displays finds from the town, ancient Chaleion and the surrounding areas, as well as underwater antiquities from the Gulf of Galaxidi. The two institutions have different focuses: one spans a long historical period, while the other brings together archaeological finds from the town, the surrounding area and the gulf.
Castles, monasteries and historic places
Salona Castle, also known as Amphissa Castle or Oria Castle, stands on a rocky hill 225 meters high, on the site of an important ancient Greek citadel. In Gravia is Hani Gravias, the site of an early success in the Greek War of Independence: in May 1821, Greek forces led by Odysseus Androutsos defeated the Ottomans there for the first time. The 15th-century Byzantine monastery of Panagia Pantasnassa offers another historical connection. It is set in a lush green landscape in the historic small town of Gravia.
Local customs and landscape
In Harmaena, a neighborhood of Amfissa, the stone-paved lanes are considered especially picturesque. The neighborhood was once known for its tanneries, called Tabakaria. The legend of Harmaena is also reenacted every year on the final weekend of Carnival. Galaxidi offers a different Carnival tradition: for the Clean Monday flour war, the municipality provides flour and participants enjoy a lively flour fight. Annual arrangements may change, so check in advance how the event is being held that year.
The Amfissa olive grove contains more than one million olive trees and is protected by the Natura 2000 network. It is described as 3,000 years old. Trizonia is the only island in the Gulf of Corinth; its described features include sheltered beaches and a picturesque harbor. The Eptastomos Cave maintains a constant temperature of 0 to 2°C. Stalactites and stalagmites have formed there over the centuries.
Activities between climbing wall, mine tunnels and sea
The Plaka climbing wall is near Sykia in Phokis. It is 1,200 meters high and is described as one of Europe’s most significant climbing routes; it is suitable for short or full-day excursions. At Fokida Mining Park, visitors can ride 200 meters deep through the tunnels in the mining cart used by the miners and learn about bauxite mining. Check current operating details before your visit.
There are also different ways to enjoy the water: in Galaxidi, sailing is available through rental services or daily sailing trips offered by local yacht clubs. Check current options in advance. Argyriou Winery in Polydrosos offers visitors wine tastings in a cellar specially designed for the purpose. The public thermal spring of Kirra is fed by four springs. Its brackish, laxative, iron-rich water forms a river that flows into the sea; check bathing conditions locally.
