Fourna brings together religious art, a monastery history that can be clearly dated, and a geographic feature: three streams meet in the town to form the Fourniotikos River. If you would like to explore culture and landscape together, the historical evidence and waterways offer different points of interest. Icons and reliquaries point to the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery and Dionysios of Fourna; the Folklore Museum complements these themes with objects from everyday life and work.

Icons, Church and Folklore

In the town centre, the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ preserves icons from the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery, reliquaries containing relics of saints, and many other works of religious art. The collection brings together specific works of art and relics with the history of the monastery. The Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour stands in the paved village square; its ecclesiastical museum houses icons by Dionysios of Fourna. You will therefore find two connections to icon painting in the town: surviving works from the monastery and icons by Dionysios.

The Folklore Museum of the Fourna Women's Association displays handicrafts, items from a bride's trousseau, household appliances and tools. It offers a different perspective from the religious collections. This distinction can help you organise your visit according to your interests: sacred art and icons on one hand, folk objects on the other. If you plan to visit the Folklore Museum, it is advisable to check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Dionysios and the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery

Dionysios, who came from Fourna, was a hieromonk, historian and painter. A hieromonk was a monk ordained as a priest. In 1734, he founded the Zoodochos Pigi Monastery and a school of icon painting and writing. The “School of Letters and Painting” operated at the monastery, where prominent figures studied. In 1906, the monastery collapsed as a result of a landslide. The dates mark different stages: the foundation and the school's activities were followed by the collapse of the monastery. The icons preserved in the cathedral give this history a tangible connection to the town.

River Landscape and Church Nearby

In Fourna, the streams Aforismena, Mavromytis and Paliotournos meet to form the Fourniotikos River. The three names refer to the individual streams; the Fourniotikos is the river formed where they converge. This offers a different perspective on the town from the story of Dionysios and the monastery: here, the focus is on the connection between several waterways, while there it is on a foundation, a school and works of art passed down through the years. The town's cultural themes are thus complemented by specific features of its landscape.

The Church of Zoodochos Pigi is near Fourna and dates to 1959. The cathedral with the monastery icons, by contrast, is in the town centre. This difference in location is a useful point of reference if you want to familiarise yourself with the different church sites before travelling.
