Psili Ammos lies on the eastern outskirts of Karystos; the western beach line begins at the western end of the harbor and extends westward. There are also walks along the waterfront road, a former fort at the harbor, and cultural sites with different focuses. This makes it possible to weigh beaches, the harbor, and the town’s history as separate interests for a stay.

Beaches and coastal sections

Psili Ammos is a sandy beach about 300 meters long on the eastern outskirts, around 600 meters from the town center. Fine sand and shallow, warm, calm water characterize the beach. Length and distance answer two different questions for orientation: How long is the beach, and how far is it from the center?

A 2017 municipal description mentions a hotel with a pool, a beach bar, and sun lounger areas on the north side, directly by the beach. The listed amenities may change. If you plan to use any of them, check current availability and access in advance.

The western beach of Karystos stretches about two kilometers westward from the western end of the harbor. Its eastern section is the eastern town beach; the middle section is called «Γαλλίδα», and the western end «Ρηγιά». A stream of the same name flows into the sea there, forming a habitat. The roughly 300 meters of Psili Ammos and the roughly two kilometers of the western beach line therefore refer to different sections and measurements. The western coast is also divided into named sections, while Psili Ammos is described in terms of its sand and water features.

The harbor and paths by the water

A waterfront road in Karystos invites you to stroll as far as the harbor breakwater, surrounded by the sea. Bourtzi, a former Venetian fort, stands at the eastern end of the harbor. These are two distinct harbor-related features: the walk along the waterfront road to the breakwater, and the fort as a historic structure. Those interested in the harbor landscape can thus distinguish a waterside route from a look at the former fortification.

Collections and local history

The Archaeological Museum of Karystos is housed in the same Yokaleio building as the Yokaleio-Pneumatikó-Ídryma. It displays finds from prehistoric times through the Roman period. A 2017 municipal description places the Yokaleio-Pneumatikó-Ídryma by the water in Karystos and mentions a multipurpose event hall. If you are interested in an event, check the current schedule.

The Χ.Β.Δεληγιώργη folk collection, known as «Καρυστινό Σπίτι», is located in the center. It includes local clothing, woven household furnishings, embroidery, photographs, and agricultural tools. While the museum displays finds from a long period, «Καρυστινό Σπίτι» brings together other kinds of objects: textiles, clothing, photographs, and farming equipment. This distinction can help you define your cultural interests more precisely.

The lower parts of the structure and some architectural elements of the mausoleum of an important Roman official have also been preserved in the center of Karystos. These remains add another point of interest alongside the museum finds: here, the focus is on surviving parts of a building; there, on objects in a collection.

A local specialty

Karystos’s traditional κουρκουμπίνες are small pieces of dough prepared with goat butter or oil. According to the municipal tourism description, they appear on the menus of all the town’s restaurants; menus can change, so if you are interested, it is worth checking the current menu. The ingredients and the traditional mention of the dish thus add a specific culinary point of interest to the beach and culture themes.
