Piraeus is the port of Athens, the largest port in Greece, and one of the largest passenger ports in Europe. This role as a port gives the city a clear point of reference; at the same time, ancient history, the museum, theater, and the coast offer different themes for a stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether your visit will focus more on cultural history or time by the water.

A Port City with an Ancient History

Themistocles made Piraeus the main port of Athens. The city’s layout is also attributed to a historical figure: it is credited to Hippodamus in the 5th century BC. In antiquity, Piraeus was an island. The name probably derives from the ancient verb diapeiraio, meaning to cross over. Piraeus’ past can thus be viewed from several perspectives: through its role as the port of Athens, the attributed city planning, and the probable origin of its name in the idea of crossing over.

Museum, Theater, and Historical Perspectives

The exhibitions at the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus cover important periods in the history of Piraeus, the communities of Attica, and the islands of the Saronic Gulf—from the Mycenaean to the Roman period. The subject matter thus spans several eras and different parts of the region. A sculpture collection is on view in the outdoor area. The Theater of Zea, dating from the Hellenistic period, is also located on the museum grounds.

The Municipal Theater of Piraeus has been a landmark of cultural life in Piraeus since the 19th century. The Veakeio open-air theater was built in 1969. Alongside the Hellenistic Theater of Zea, these represent different historical points of reference: Zea recalls the Hellenistic period, the municipal theater its longstanding cultural role, and Veakeio a specific year of construction.

The history of the Church of Saint Spyridon, the patron saint of Piraeus, is also connected with a monastery. According to some accounts, its roots date back to the 11th or 12th century. The wording leaves the dating where it belongs: in accounts of the monastery’s history.

Coastal Route and Walks

A coastal route along Akti Themistokleous leads to Freattyda, where there is an organized beach. At Mikrolimano, you can stroll along the spacious esplanade, which is described as safe for children. These offer different ways to spend time outdoors: the route leads to the beach at Freattyda, while Mikrolimano offers a walk along the esplanade.

When looking for a hotel in Piraeus, it helps to first identify the focus of your stay: would you like to explore cultural history and theater, or focus on the coastal route and walks? This way, planning starts with the kind of stay you would like to have in the city.
