A coastal wetland that serves as a stopover for birds during their spring and autumn migrations, and a temple whose ruins stand almost 60 metres above the sea: Attica can be explored through a wide variety of discoveries. Cultural sites tell of religious centres and bygone eras; protected areas reveal the region’s ecological diversity.

Ancient Sites and Their Stories

The permanent exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Marathon presents the history of the region from prehistoric times to the Roman era. Visitors can also see finds from the Roman sanctuary of the Egyptian gods at Brexiza. Here, visitors encounter both a broad span of time and a specific religious site under one roof. Check the museum’s latest visitor information before your visit.

The Archaeological Museum of Vravrona also connects its exhibition with its surroundings: it is near the archaeological site of Vravrona and houses finds dating from the 3rd millennium BC to the 4th century AD. The permanent exhibition illustrates the Sanctuary of Artemis at Vravrona, one of the most important sanctuaries in the region of Attica. It also explores the history of Mesogaia and its surrounding area.

In Athens, the monuments of the Acropolis represent another way to experience antiquity. They form an important architectural and artistic complex, embody the ideals of the 5th century BC and are considered the pinnacle of ancient Greek architectural development. In Eleusis, meanwhile, the sanctuary was an ancient religious centre dedicated to Demeter and Persephone. The rites held there were known as the Eleusinian Mysteries. At the end of the Sacred Way stands the Telesterion, where the religious ceremonies took place.

Another striking destination at Attica’s southern tip is Cape Sounion, an important archaeological site. The Athenians built the later Temple of Poseidon in 444 BC; its ruins now stand almost 60 metres above the sea. In suitable weather, visitors can watch the sunset there. The view stretches from the coast to nearby islands and the mountains of the Peloponnese.

Wetlands, Mountains and Coast

The Schinias wetland is Attica’s largest coastal wetland and an important stopover for birds during their spring and autumn migrations. The protected area includes the entire Schinias National Park and a surrounding buffer zone. It lies in northeastern Attica, in the Marathon plain. Several reptile species and the endemic fish Pelasgus marathonicus live along the banks of its canals and ponds. The wetland is therefore both a stopover for migratory birds and a habitat for other animal species.

Mount Parnitha is also defined by its protected status. It has been a national park since 1961; the national park’s core area includes the summit region. The protected area covers 1,413 hectares and lies in northern Attica. Parnitha is also the only area in southern Greece where red deer (Cervus elaphus) can survive. Parnitha is therefore both a national park and a unique habitat for red deer in southern Greece.

The Athenian Riviera offers a coastal contrast. It stretches for 60 kilometres from Piraeus to Cape Sounion and includes sandy and pebbly beaches, small coves, rocky inlets, beaches with caves and rocks for swimming. Water sports are also among the outdoor activities available in Attica and on the islands. Attica’s hills and highlands offer appealing routes; trekking and climbing are also listed as activities in Attica and on the Saronic Islands.

Wine Routes and Travel Planning

Mesogaia offers another facet: the wine routes let visitors tour wineries, learn about wine production and taste different varieties of wine. Confirm tour details and visiting arrangements directly with each winery. If you are looking for accommodation in Attica, start by considering what you want to focus on during your stay—for example, archaeological sites and museums, protected landscapes, the coast or wine. Attica can be reached by ship, train, car or plane; check schedules and connections before travelling.
