An ancient tower, several churches and an Agricultural Folklore Museum give Varnavas a cultural focus. There is also the gorge at the entrance to the village. The area offers different perspectives for planning your trip: architectural history, religious art, everyday and agricultural culture, and landscape. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether buildings, the museum, events or nature are especially important to you.

Tower, Churches and Museum

The ancient tower from the 5th century BC provides a specific historical reference point. Among the churches, the Church of Saint George is Byzantine; the Church of Saints Peter and Paul has a hand-carved wooden iconostasis. The Church of Saint Paraskevi adds another religious site in Varnavas. The cultural sites can therefore be distinguished by their features: the tower is notable for its date, Saint George for its Byzantine classification, and Saints Peter and Paul for their carved furnishing. This means visitors can explore everything from an ancient structure and a Byzantine church to a specific piece of craftsmanship.

The Interactive Agricultural Folklore Museum offers a different focus. Its collection includes local costumes, textiles and embroidery, as well as household items and agricultural tools. It therefore spans clothing and textile work, household life and agriculture. The museum has 5,000 exhibits, a significant portion of which visitors can view. A guided tour offers an engaging introduction to the museum’s subject areas. The collection and the tour provide different ways to explore: the exhibits illustrate the breadth of the themes, while the tour explains the museum’s different sections.

Landscape and Beach Nearby

The gorge at the entrance to Varnavas is one of the areas of exceptional natural beauty. The road between Kapandriti and Varnavas also runs parallel to a gorge with abundant water and plane trees. Both its location at the entrance to the village and specific features such as water and plane trees are relevant to understanding the landscape.

Varnavas Beach is 12 kilometres from the village centre. The municipality describes it as one of the cleanest beaches in Attica. If you are planning to combine a beach visit with visits to the village, keep in mind the distance between the beach and the village centre. This lets you account for the beach as a separate part of your trip, rather than conflating it with the cultural sites in the village.

Cultural Events at Different Times of Year

The cultural events also offer different seasonal highlights. The event “ΠΟΛΙΤΙΣΤΙΚΟΣ ΒΑΡΝΑΒΑΣ” takes place in Varnavas every September. The annual cultural event “…ΤΗΣ ΘΑΛΑΣΣΑΣ ΤΑ ΚΥΜΑΤΑ” is held at Varnavas Beach in late July or early August. The two events therefore take place at different locations and at different times of year: September in the village, and late July or early August at the beach. If you would like to plan your trip around either event, check the dates for the relevant year.
