Nea Smyrni offers several cultural highlights: a spacious central square, memorial sites commemorating the history of Asia Minor, the Metropolitan Church of Agia Fotini, and the Estia collections. When planning your stay, you can choose the focus that interests you most: public remembrance, ecclesiastical design, or historical holdings. These themes differ in location, subject matter, and historical context.

The central square

Nea Smyrni’s central square covers approximately 20 stremmata and is one of the largest squares in Greece. The approximate area gives an idea of its size, while the comparison places it in the context of Greece as a whole. Together, these offer two perspectives: a specific area measurement and its standing among the country’s largest squares.

Remembrance at Chrysostomos Smyrnis Square

Chrysostomos Smyrnis Square features monuments to the lost homelands and victims of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as well as busts of notable figures from Nea Smyrni. At the narrow end of the trapezoidal square, towards Leoforos Syngrou, lies the Grove of Asia Minor Remembrance. The monuments, busts, and grove represent different forms of remembrance: the monuments refer to homelands and victims, the busts to notable figures, and the grove’s name itself evokes Asia Minor. The square is therefore a distinct cultural highlight for travelers who want to include local remembrance in their itinerary.

Agia Fotini: Woodcarvings and bell tower

The Metropolitan Church of Agia Fotini preserves 19th-century woodcarvings that combine Greek tradition with Western Baroque. Their reliefs depict numerous themes from the Bible and church life. The 33-meter-high bell tower was built in 1996 and modeled on the bell tower of the church in Smyrna. Agia Fotini thus brings together two historical periods: the 19th-century woodcarvings and the tower built in 1996. Its design also offers several points of interest: the combination of artistic traditions, the religious imagery, and the tower’s historical model.

Estia Museum and Library

The collection at Estia’s Museum of the Asia Minor Campaign includes Asia Minor relics, clothing, and personal belongings of prominent figures from the campaign. These include objects associated with Chrysostomos of Smyrna, Eleftherios Venizelos, and General Anastasios Papoulas. The collection brings together different kinds of objects associated with specific historical figures.

The library of Estia Néa Smýrni holds 60,000 titles, including 40,000 on historical and cultural subjects and 20,000 on Asia Minor. Its holdings also include 500 photographs of the Asia Minor Campaign, 100 maps of Asia Minor and mainland Greece, and 90 photographs of Smyrna and its surroundings. In addition to books, the collection includes dedicated photographic and cartographic materials. The topics and media listed offer different ways to explore the history, people, and places of Asia Minor in Nea Smyrni.
