Ano Liosia offers culture-minded travellers a range of perspectives: in the town, there is a museum on the grounds of the Church of Saint John the Theologian and the festival of Saints Constantine and Helen; the Dema Wall is located nearby. The subject matter thus ranges from ethnographic and ecclesiastical exhibits to an archaeological site at a crossing into the Athens Plain. To help plan your trip, distinguish between these attractions: would you like to explore exhibits and festival culture, or an archaeological site in the surrounding area?

The Dema Wall and its location

The Dema Wall is located three kilometres west of the centre of Ano Liosia, on the saddle between Mount Parnitha and Mount Aigaleo. This saddle formed the broadest passage from the west into the Athens Plain. The location places the wall within a landscape whose historical function was shaped by this passage. The wall is visible over a length of 4,360 metres; its largest surviving section lies east of the Ano Liosia and Fyli landfill. The visible length and the largest surviving section describe two different aspects: one figure refers to the extent, the other to a particular part of the structure. This gives you both a sense of its location and an idea of where the largest surviving section lies.

A museum spanning folklore, history and the church

A folklore, historical and ecclesiastical museum is located on the grounds of the Church of Saint John the Theologian in Ano Liosia. Its exhibits include a replica of an authentic Greek house and objects relating to the history of the national struggles. There are also liturgical vestments and vessels, as well as a replica of an altar during the Divine Liturgy. A depiction of a house, historical objects and liturgical exhibits are therefore presented side by side. The museum offers a different perspective from the Dema Wall, whose location and visible length define its character. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Festival culture in Ano Liosia

The festival of Saints Constantine and Helen is another cultural landmark in the town. A local news report describes it as the most important social event in Ano Liosia since the municipality was founded at the beginning of the previous century. At the cultural events held for the festival, the traditional dance section of the Municipality of Fyli and the dance groups of the Arvanite associations «ΦΥΛΑΣΙΑ» and «ΓΡΙΖΑ» opened the programme on the second day. This particular programme item therefore brought together contributions from the municipal dance section and the named associations. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the current event dates in advance.

Find hotels to suit your plans

When looking for a hotel in Ano Liosia, your cultural interests can be a useful starting point: the museum is on the grounds of the church mentioned above, while the Dema Wall is nearby. When choosing, compare the location stated in each listing with your own plans, and check the accommodation details directly with the provider. This lets you base your search on the places you want to visit, rather than assuming that a hotel is located near an archaeological site simply because the site itself is nearby.
