For a culture-focused trip, Amarousi offers several themes to explore: the Greek shadow theatre of Karagiozis, local history and the former way of life of its residents, as well as the Athens Olympic Museum. The municipal “Cultural Routes” program also offers organized tours of the city’s historic landmarks and natural and cultural heritage sites. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether a particular form of theatre, the history of Maroussi, or a guided perspective on the city will shape your stay.

Karagiozis and Shadow Theatre

The Spathario Museum of Shadow Theatre of the Municipality of Maroussi has been operating since June 1995. Its works and figures offer insight into the history of shadow theatre and Greek Karagiozis from 1860 to the present day. This time span places Karagiozis within a longer development. If you are interested in puppet theatre, this focus differs from an exhibition on local history: at the Spathario Museum, the works and figures introduce you to shadow theatre, while the Historical and Folklore Museum explores traditions and the former way of life of the residents.

Local History in Exhibitions and Collections

The Historical and Folklore Museum of Maroussi focuses on local history, traditions and the former way of life of the residents. Its exhibition comprises three galleries and spans the ground floor, first floor and second floor. The three levels give the exhibition a spatial structure; its content brings together the city’s history and its former everyday life. The museum holds more than 1,500 objects. The collection may change as it develops, and most of the items were donated. The exhibition’s themes and the origins of most of its objects can therefore both help you plan your visit. Those with a stronger interest in Maroussi and its traditions will find a different focus here than at the Spathario Museum.

Athens Olympic Museum

The Athens Olympic Museum is located in the Golden Hall shopping center in Maroussi. Its Olympic theme complements the subjects of shadow theatre and local history with another cultural point of interest. The museums mentioned here can therefore be distinguished by their different themes: Karagiozis and shadow theatre, life in Maroussi in the past, and an Olympic focus. Golden Hall is the location of the Olympic Museum in Maroussi.

Guided Cultural Routes

The municipal “Cultural Routes” program includes organized tours of the city’s historic landmarks and natural and cultural heritage sites. Alongside the exhibitions, this offers a tour format focused on places and their heritage. If you would like to include an organized tour in your cultural itinerary, this is a different starting point from choosing a museum theme. If interested, check whether a suitable date is available during your trip. To help you decide, consider the difference between a museum with a specific thematic focus and a tour of the city’s landmarks and heritage sites.
