A 1.2 km surfaced circular trail makes Knowes Colliery Woodland a tangible nature and history attraction in Fauldhouse. The 18-hectare conifer woodland lies on the southern edge of the village and was created on former coal-mining land. Benches, signs, information boards and improved access complement the trail. Fauldhouse railway station is next to the woodland; from there, it is about a two-minute walk.

Woodland and Mining History

Knowes Colliery Woodland is home to roe deer, foxes, woodland birds and orange-tip butterflies. The circular trail passes through a woodland whose former use is part of its history; the information boards provide additional guidance for your visit.

Another landscape feature is Fauldhouse Forest. It lies in moorland between Fauldhouse and Whitburn, on land previously used for mining coal, iron and clay. The two woodland areas therefore differ both in their location and in the former uses described: Knowes Colliery Woodland was created on coal-mining land, while several raw materials are mentioned in connection with Fauldhouse Forest.

Trails, Views and a Cycling Link

The western section of the WL24 Fauldhouse Rail Path offers views across Greenburn Golf Course and the hills beyond. For a cycling option, there is the B7010 cycle path from Fauldhouse to Longridge. It runs off-road, connects the two communities and was completed in October 2018. This gives you a choice of different landscapes and activities: the surfaced loop at Knowes Colliery Woodland, the views along the western section of the Rail Path and a cycling link between two places.

Sport and Other Local Attractions

Greenburn Golf Club has an 18-hole course combining parkland and moorland. It is 6,067 yards long and has a par of 71; the club has been at its current location for more than 50 years. If you include the course details in your plans, check the latest information, as it may change.

The sports hall at Fauldhouse Partnership Centre is available to hire. Check availability and prices directly with the Centre. There is also a 3G artificial turf pitch that can be divided into three small-sided pitches for seven-a-side football or one full-size pitch for eleven-a-side football. You should also check the pitch’s current availability before making specific plans.

Fauldhouse Swimming Pool has a steam room. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the latest opening times and prices, as both may change. A memorial bench for the victims of the Second World War is located at Fauldhouse War Memorial; a report from March 2026 listed it as newly installed.
