Golf history and coastal walks give Gullane two distinct focal points for a stay. The Heritage of Golf Museum explores the development of golf and the craft of East Lothian’s early clubmakers. Gullane Bents is a wide sandy bay that is ideal for walking; there is also a path through the dunes and the Gullane Circular route. You can combine the town’s golfing heritage with time on the coast.
Golf History, Museum and Play
Visits to the Heritage of Golf Museum are by appointment only. Appointments can be booked by phone on +44 (0) 1620 842 744. As the appointment arrangements may change, confirm your appointment by phone before travelling. The museum explores both the development of golf and the craft of East Lothian’s early clubmakers. It offers a different way to experience golf than playing a round on a course.
St Andrew’s Kirk is also part of historic Gullane and is designated a Scheduled Monument. The courses have their own historical milestones: Gullane No. 2 was designed by Willie Park Jnr in 1898, and Gullane No. 3 opened in 1910. The dates mark different milestones—in No. 2’s case, the design; for No. 3, the opening.
For rounds on the respective courses, Gullane Golf Club offers booking options for individual rounds, a day ticket or a combined package. Options may change, so check the current terms before planning. The museum and course dates provide historical context, while the club options address the practical question of your golf itinerary. The Gullane Children’s Course has a six-hole layout and can be played by any child at any time for free.
Gullane Bents and the Walks
Gullane Bents is a wide sandy bay, ideal for walking. A path runs through the sand dunes behind Gullane Bents. This gives the coastal stretch two clear points of interest: the bay itself and the path through the dunes.
The Gullane Circular route follows grassy tracks and paths, as well as a sandy beach. The signposted route goes over Gullane Hill and across the golf course. Unlike a walk at Gullane Bents, the Circular covers several types of terrain and passes over the hill and golf course. This lets you choose between a beach-and-dune setting and a circular route with varied terrain.
