Seedorf can be explored through two distinctive themes: protected Lake Seedorf and the estate’s history. An official bathing area and trails around the lake sit alongside Seedorf Gatehouse, with its museum rooms and concerts. When planning your visit, you can consider nature by the water, outdoor activities and culture as distinct areas of focus.

Lake Seedorf: Swimming and Trails in the Nature Reserve

Lake Seedorf covers about 75 hectares and is up to 4.2 metres deep. It lies within a designated nature reserve. There is an official bathing area at the lake, as well as a cycling and walking trail around it. This gives visitors a choice between swimming at the designated area and getting active on the circular trail.

To protect the area, stay on designated trails, use the official bathing area for swimming and do not enter protected areas. Also follow the local signage. If you plan to use the circular trail, check the latest trail conditions before setting off.

Seedorf Gatehouse and the Estate’s History

The Seedorf estate includes a historic gatehouse and a manor house. Seedorf Gatehouse was built in 1583 and is an important Renaissance building in Schleswig-Holstein. Museum rooms are located in the former prison cells and the former torture chamber; concerts are held in the Knights’ Hall. Guided museum tours are offered regularly.

The exhibition focuses on life at the Seedorf estate and the history of the owner families. Exhibits and explanatory panels place these themes at the centre. In this way, the gatehouse combines architectural history with insights into life on the estate in earlier times: visitors interested in architecture can also explore the history of the place and its owner families. For specific visit plans, check the latest information on tours and concert dates, as the programme and availability may change.

Walking in Seedorf and the Nature Park

The Holstein Switzerland Nature Park offers more than 270 kilometres of walking trails. These include marked routes around Seedorf, Glasau and Nehms. The walking options therefore extend beyond the individual circular trail by the lake; the routes mentioned connect several places, without implying a particular order for visiting them. When choosing a route, take current trail conditions into account, as individual conditions may change.

Segeberg as the Broader Destination

The broader travel destination of Segeberg offers additional, distinct themes. The Karl May Games take place every summer in the open-air theatre at the foot of Bad Segeberg’s Kalkberg hill. The theatre can accommodate up to 7,700 spectators per performance. Check the dates for the relevant year before visiting.

Gut Stockseehof is another regional attraction: sweet cherries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries are sold directly through the estate and at the farmers’ market, along with other fresh regional products. The fruit and market offerings available depend on the season; check in advance. This means Seedorf’s local highlights and the seasonal offerings in the broader travel destination of Segeberg can be considered as separate aspects of your trip planning.
