Weesby combines an open cultural landscape with distinctive historic buildings and a section of the Border Route. Fields, meadows and small woodlands surround the village; the area is considered suitable for hiking and cycling. You can therefore make the landscape your main focus or turn your attention to architecture and the route.

Landscape and the Border Route

Hiking and cycling are well suited to the fields, meadows and small woodlands around Weesby. The Border Route is another useful point of reference when planning: its third stage is near Bögelhuus 8 in Weesby, connects the village with Flensburg and continues through the Fröslee-Jardelunder Moor and Frösleer Forst before reaching Flensburg. The route is described as freely accessible. Even so, check trail conditions and navigation along the route before setting out.

The landscape and the route offer different perspectives: the surrounding area invites you to focus on hiking or cycling, while the Border Route provides a specific connection to Flensburg and the named moorland and woodland areas. Which perspective best suits your stay depends on whether you would rather explore the landscape around Weesby or follow a named stage.

Two listed houses

According to Schleswig-Holstein’s list of listed buildings, dated 1 February 2021, Weesby has two listed houses. At Am Teich 1 stands an early 20th-century brick house with Expressionist decorative features. At Dorfstraße 10 is a Geestharden house dating from the mid-19th century, with a thatched half-hipped roof. These two addresses offer a chance to compare different periods of construction and design features: brick and Expressionist ornamentation at one, and the traditional roof shape of the Geestharden house at the other. Check whether access is possible before visiting.

More topics in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination also offers cultural points of interest. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danevirke still remain. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history around the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These examples offer different perspectives: World Heritage and the surviving rampart on the one hand, and historical remembrance and its interpretation in a museum on the other.

The wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination offers several different landscapes for nature-focused activities. Geltinger Birk covers 773 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. Well-maintained paths and guided hikes featuring information about flora and fauna are among the activities available there. On Holnis, you can observe more than 130 bird species, including around 65 breeding species. The Schlei Nature Park, meanwhile, comprises gentle hills, woodlands, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing coves; its brackish-water areas provide habitats for numerous endangered bird species.

The Schlei Nature Park also offers various ways to get active: guided nature tours are available, and the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes pass through the landscape. The 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn is a circular cycling route around the central part of the Schlei, starting in Arnis. In this wider regional context, nature tours, cycle routes and a clearly described circular route can be explored as distinct topics.
