Süderbrarup offers several distinct reasons to visit: archaeological themes around the Thorsberg Moor, the recurring Brarup Market and routes for longer excursions. When planning, it helps to distinguish between culture, an extended hike and seasonal activities. This lets you decide whether local history, nature or an event date should be the focus.

History and local experiences

One of the fittings in St. Jacobi Church is dated to 1578 and is considered one of the oldest. The Historical Cultural and Nature Trail starts at Brarup Market Square, next to the former Schleidörfer Tourist Information Office at Königstraße 3. Check access before visiting the church, as it may change during conservation work.

The route around Thorsberg Moor also includes a circular trail with eight stops. They explain the settlement landscape, archaeological discoveries, and excavated weapons and equipment. A large part of the archaeological material from Thorsberg Moor is housed at the Archaeological State Museum in Schleswig at Gottorf Castle, where it is displayed in a permanent exhibition. Check the current exhibition before visiting, as collections and displays may change.

Brarup Market is a recurring fair in Süderbrarup. It runs from the Friday before the last weekend in July until the following Tuesday and is considered the largest rural fair in Schleswig-Holstein. Check the specific dates for your year of travel. The Angelner Steam Railway is a heritage railway with Scandinavian rolling stock that runs between Kappeln and Süderbrarup. Operating days, vehicles in service and operations may vary seasonally; checking the timetable can help with planning.

Landscape and trails

At the Os Nature Reserve, the landscape is dominated by a ridge about 500 metres long and 9 metres high, formed during the last Ice Age. The protected area includes heathland and wet lowland habitats. Orchids, small sedges and marsh marigolds grow there; almost 30 plant species are considered endangered. The ridge illustrates the area's geology, while the information about its plants draws attention to its habitats.

A 20.18-kilometre circular hike starts and ends at Königstraße 3. Its sections pass through the town, along a restored railway line and through Peters- and Kuhholz; the route also takes in Thorsberg Moor and the archaeological hill of Kummerhy. In this way, the loop connects sections through the town, woodland and archaeological sites. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The “Zur heiligen Quelle” outdoor swimming pool is in the centre of Süderbrarup and has been in operation since 1975. It operates seasonally; if you plan to visit, check the latest information about the season.
