Steinberg lies right on the Flensburg Fjord, with views stretching as far as Denmark. Around eight kilometres of varied natural and activity beach contrast with the hilly Angeln countryside inland. The coast and hinterland therefore offer two distinct landscape highlights for a stay.
Beach, fjord and Angeln
The roughly eight kilometres refer to the length of the beach, not the distance of any single cycling or hiking route. Cycling and hiking routes run along the beach and through the inland countryside. Visitors choosing an outing based on the scenery can choose between coastal paths and routes through the hilly Angeln countryside. This gives you a choice of different settings—beach or inland—for planning your day.
Local facilities
Visitor facilities include three campsites with a total of 500 pitches, restaurants, the Oestergaard cultural barn and the Norgaardholz bathing facility, which involves the DLRG. The 500 pitches are shared across the three campsites. If the capacity or availability of these facilities is important for your plans, check these details before travelling.
Schleswig-Flensburg: history, nature and routes
The wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel destination offers further historical and scenic highlights. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. The Idstedt historical memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These offer different ways to explore the past: the surviving Danevirke and the events associated with Idstedt.
The nature destinations in Schleswig-Flensburg district also each have their own focus. At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the district’s largest nature reserve. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks where visitors can learn about the local flora and fauna. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species. In Schlei Nature Park, the landscape ranges from gentle hills, forests and hedgerows to rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and bathing bays. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. The Holnis peninsula is the northernmost tip of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape.
There are several options for cycling and nature outings in Schlei Nature Park. The SchleiUferTörn is a 25-kilometre circular cycling route around the central part of the Schlei, starting in Arnis. Guided nature tours are also offered in the nature park; the Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also pass through the landscape. The options differ in format: you can choose a named circular cycling route, a guided nature tour or signposted cycling routes.
