Munkbrarup combines distinctive architecture and milling technology with local hiking routes and the sandy beach at Bockholmwik. This gives you the choice of cultural history, outdoor activities and time on the Flensburg Fjord. The trails, church, windmill and beach each offer a different focus.

St. Laurentius: Romanesque granite construction

St. Laurentius was built between 1175 and 1200 as a Romanesque church made of granite blocks. The richly decorated south portal has three columns in each stepped jamb. Inside is a granite baptismal font dating from around 1200, considered the church’s oldest and most valuable work of art. The construction period, granite architecture and portal design offer different ways to explore the historic church.

The Hoffnung Windmill and its technology

The Hoffnung Windmill preserves technical details inside and in its structure: its historic tailpole mechanism is used to turn the mill cap into the wind. Inside, three grinding systems and a pearling mill are preserved. Guided tours cover the mill, local people and the surrounding landscape; check availability and format in advance. Readings and exhibitions also take place in summer, and the seasonal program may vary. The mill brings together technical history and a changing cultural program.

Hiking routes and cycling trails

Munkbrarup has several local hiking routes. The northern route is four kilometers long. The eastern route has viewpoints and a shelter in the Autal valley; the seven-kilometer southern route passes historic landmarks and the village pond. The northern and southern routes can be compared by distance, while the eastern route offers a different focus, with its viewpoints and shelter. The beach and woods also invite you to take walks in the neighboring communities of GlĂĽcksburg and Langballigau. Four cycling routes in Munkbrarup range from approximately 20 to 28.5 kilometers. This lets you choose hiking routes by length and local features, and compare the cycling routes by their approximate distances.
