Medelby combines a historic landmark with cycling opportunities and several types of accommodation. St. Matthew’s Church stands on the northern edge of the town, and the surrounding area is ideal for cycling. Camping Mitte offers pitches, holiday apartments and mobile homes. This makes it possible to plan local history, outdoor activities and accommodation choices as separate parts of your trip.

Church and Local History

St. Matthew’s Church stands on a hill on the northern edge of Medelby. Its main structure was built from uncut fieldstones sometime between about 1150 and 1200. The high-set Romanesque windows give the building a fortified appearance; the church may have served as a place of refuge for the local population. Medelby Church is a listed cultural monument. It therefore combines a specific historic building with a possible former protective function.

Stay at Camping Mitte

Camping Mitte is open year-round and offers spacious pitches, holiday apartments and mobile homes. When planning your trip, you can first choose the type of accommodation you want and then check availability for your dates. The site also has a playground, a small indoor swimming pool and a multi-purpose hall with a table tennis table. The range of accommodation is therefore combined with several specific facilities at the campsite.

Cycling and Landscape

The area around Medelby is ideal for cycling. The cycling infrastructure project includes a Jardelund–Medelby section; check whether this route is currently available before setting out. The NSG Eichenkratt and Kiesgrube south of Böxlund nature reserve is partly located in Medelby. Cycling in the surrounding area and the reserve’s partial location in Medelby are two distinct points to consider when planning: one concerns an activity, the other the protected landscape.

Schleswig-Flensburg in the Wider Region

Those who look beyond Medelby to the wider destination of Schleswig-Flensburg will find further historical and natural attractions. Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018; more than 25 kilometres of the rampart of the Danevirke are still standing today. In Idstedt, the historic memorial site and museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These regional cultural sites offer a different perspective from the history of the church in Medelby.

The landscapes of the district of Schleswig-Flensburg also broaden the picture: the Flensburg Fjord features unspoilt cliffs and beaches, and the district also includes the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. In Schlei Nature Park, gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, rapeseed and grain fields alternate with sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. Geltinger Birk covers 773 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. More than 130 bird species can be observed on Holnis, including around 65 breeding species.

The wider destination also has the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn, a cycling circuit around the middle part of the Schlei that starts in Arnis.
