Maasholm combines a historic village walk with sailing and other water sports, as well as paths by the water. For planning, it is worth considering different scales: from the village walk and two-kilometre nature trail to the nearly three-kilometre hike and the 180-kilometre nature park hiking trail. This lets you choose village history, time by the water and observing nature as your own points of focus.

Village History and Fishing

A historic walk through the village can include the harbour, sheltered moorings for boats on the Schlei, St Peter’s Church, the listed sea rescue station dating from 1916 and thatched fishermen’s houses. These stops bring together maritime local history with ecclesiastical and architectural impressions.

The Tourist Information Office houses a small fishing museum about the history of fishing in Maasholm. It also has regional brochures and information panels about Maasholm and its surroundings. You can borrow boules from the Tourist Information Office to use on the boules court next to the motorhome parking area.

Water Sports and Trips on the Schlei

Sailing lessons in small groups on the Schlei are offered from Maasholm marina. When the wind is suitable, it is possible to sail past the lighthouse and out to sea. You can learn windsurfing and wingfoiling on the Wormshöfter Noor; a surf school is located right on the shore. Activities on the Noor may vary depending on the operator.

The Schumacher Bridge in Maasholm is a departure point for excursion boats on the Schlei. As departure arrangements may vary, check the options for your chosen date in advance.

On Foot and by Bike

A two-kilometre nature trail connects the Exhöft hiking car park with the Maasholm Nature Experience Centre. A hike of just under three kilometres leads from Maasholm harbour along the Schlei dyke via Hegeberg to the centre, or onwards to the Baltic Sea. Maasholm is about a 10-minute drive or 15-minute bike ride from the Baltic Sea beach; both times are approximate.

The “Über Altona nach Belgrad” cycle route (“Via Altona to Belgrade”) starts and ends in Maasholm and is about 35 kilometres long. Take local trail conditions into account when planning. The Nature Park Hiking Trail offers a different scale: it starts in Maasholm in the Schlei Nature Park and passes through four nature parks in Schleswig-Holstein. The 180-kilometre route is marked in both directions with yellow arrows; shorter sections and loops are also possible. This comparison can help you choose between a cycle route of a set length and a hiking route that can be divided into sections.

Nature in the Surrounding Area

Nearby Geltinger Birk has beaches, lagoons, salt marshes, coastal forests, cliffs and moorland. During bird migration, birds can be observed at Charlotte Mill, the Beveroe Bridge and the Krötenweg near Falshöft. So, alongside the trails starting in Maasholm, you can also explore the surrounding landscape and observe nature in different seasons.

Haithabu and the Danewerk have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since June 2018. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum also provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the 1848 uprising and the Battle of Idstedt. These sites offer a distinct historical focus within the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.
