Klein Rheide brings together the landscape between the Geest and the Rheider Au lowlands, historic routes and a connection to the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycling network. The Ochsenweg runs through the village, while the Viking-Frisian Way passes nearby. Klein Rheide also has two cultural monuments. This offers different perspectives for planning a trip: river landscapes and habitats, routes with historic connections, and specific architectural and natural monuments.

Landscape along the Rheider Au

Klein Rheide lies between the Geest and the lowlands of the Rheider Au. The surrounding wet meadows and pastures provide a habitat for rare species, including the northern lapwing. North of the village, the Rheider Au flows as a tributary of the Treene; it is part of the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. The landscape can therefore be viewed both in terms of the local waterway and as part of the larger river region.

The northern lapwing is one of the species explicitly named as living in this habitat. Meadows, pastures and the river course thus offer an independent nature-related connection to Klein Rheide alongside its historic routes. Those who put the landscape first when choosing a travel destination will find a clear connection here to lowlands and waterways.

Routes with different points of interest

The historic Ochsenweg runs through Klein Rheide, giving visitors an impression of the natural landscape and cultural history. The Viking-Frisian Way passes by the village, connects St. Peter-Ording with Maasholm and presents historic evidence in the context of Vikings and Frisians. As described, the Ochsenweg connects landscape and cultural history, while the Viking-Frisian Way focuses on the history of Vikings and Frisians.

Klein Rheide is connected to the Eider-Treene-Sorge cycling network. The 240-kilometre route passes through Schleswig-Holstein’s lowland landscape and is described as signposted, separated from motor traffic and family-friendly. There are no specially constructed cycle paths in Klein Rheide itself. For a specific ride, it is therefore worth checking the route within the wider network; you should also check the signage and condition locally before setting off.

Cultural monuments in the village

Two cultural monuments are associated with specific years. A thatched-roof house on Untere Dorfstraße was built in 1872. The double oak dates from 1898 and stands at the intersection of Untere and Obere Dorfstraße. Thus, both a building and a tree are among Klein Rheide’s named cultural monuments.

UNESCO World Heritage Site nearby

The archaeological border complex of Haithabu and the Danevirke, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a visitor attraction, is located near Klein Rheide. The Danevirke includes earth ramparts with defensive ditches, a brick wall, two fortifications and a sea barrier. This is another historic point of interest in the area, alongside the individual cultural monuments in the village. The local monuments and the Danevirke can be viewed at different scales: specific landmarks in Klein Rheide and an archaeological border complex nearby.
