Rabel lies in eastern Angeln between the Schlei and the Baltic Sea, on the narrow stretch of the Schlei known as Rabelsund, and is an officially recognized resort. When choosing accommodation in Rabel, there are two main focuses to consider: the water and local history around Rabelsund, or walks and excursions through the wider landscape. You could spend your stay following the local circular trail; if you are planning additional nature and water experiences, you will find more topics in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination.
Water, Rabelsund and Gut Buckhagen
Rabel borders the Schlei to the south and the Wormshöfter Noor to the east, near Gut Buckhagen. At Rabelsund, the Schlei reaches a depth of 22 metres. Until 1905, historic fish traps associated with Gut Buckhagen were used there for fishing. Gut Buckhagen is also a sight in Rabel. This local point of interest therefore brings together a distinctive spot on the water and a piece of the area’s fishing history. The figure of 22 metres refers to Rabelsund, not to the Schlei as a whole.
Rabel is also located within Schlei Nature Park. This means the village can be viewed as part of a larger natural landscape that extends beyond the individual stretch of shoreline.
On foot to Rabelsund
The Am Schleiufer zum Rabelsund circular trail is 5.03 kilometres long, rated easy and unpaved. It starts in Rabel and follows farm tracks and quiet roads. Along the way, it crosses broad rapeseed fields; near Rabel, the Schlei shore forms a small steep bank with views across the water. The route thus takes in both farmland and the shoreline landscape. Its specific length and easy rating are useful points of reference; however, the trail is unpaved. As trail conditions may change seasonally, check them before setting out.
More activities and places to visit
Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the expansive landscape right beside the Schlei. In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination, there are signposted routes on the north side of the Schlei for cyclists and walkers, running partly along the shore and partly inland. This is a different scale from the specific circular trail in Rabel: one option is a clearly defined loop, while the other offers regional routes between the shore and inland areas.
Boat trips on the Schlei are another activity associated with visits to Rabel. For a different kind of excursion, the kilometres-long sandy beach at Kronsgaard is a worthwhile destination during a stay in Rabel. The Geltinger Birk is also among the places to visit in connection with trips to Rabel. You can choose between different focuses: a walk, an activity on the water, or a beach or nature destination.
Nature in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg destination
Geltinger Birk covers 773 hectares and is the largest nature reserve in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. It has well-maintained paths and guided walks that share information about the flora and fauna. Schlei Nature Park’s landscapes include rolling hills, forests, hedgerows, rapeseed and grain fields, sandy beaches and swimming coves. The Schlei’s brackish waters provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. These regional facts complement Rabel’s local points of interest with nature park and nature reserve themes in the wider destination.
