Winnert lies in the Bredstedt-Husum Geest, also known as the Ostenfeld-Schwabstedt Geest, on the edge of the Schleswig Geest. Large farmsteads characterize the village; Wildes Moor is a relevant excursion destination for Winnert. Planning a stay therefore involves not only the village’s appearance, but also routes, signage, and travel arrangements.

Farmsteads and Listed Buildings

Some of the large farmsteads are historic in character and shape the village’s appearance. Four residential or agricultural buildings are listed as cultural monuments. These represent two different scales: the farmsteads shape the village as larger complexes, while the listed cultural monuments refer to individual buildings. Those interested in Winnert’s village structure can therefore find both an overarching architectural character and specific individual buildings to look out for.

Wildes Moor: Nature and Routes

Wildes Moor is an excursion destination for Winnert. More than 90 bird species have been recorded there, including 50 breeding bird species. The 50 breeding bird species are part of the total of more than 90. The moor also provides a refuge for moor frogs, tree frogs, grass snakes, and adders. In addition to birdlife, amphibians and reptiles are therefore also part of the area’s natural environment.

Several entrances are open to visitors, and various routes lead through the moor. The moor nature trail provides information about the area’s history and its role in biological climate protection. For cyclists, the Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route is another point of interest: it runs directly through Wildes Moor. Picnic areas are located beside the Treene and at a crossroads in the moor.

Routes and Orientation

The Viking-Frisian Way runs through Winnert between St. Peter-Ording on the North Sea and Maasholm on the Baltic Sea. The Eider-Treene-Sorge Cycle Route, by contrast, runs through Wildes Moor. The routes therefore have different geographical points of reference: one passes through the village itself, the other through the moor.

The state of the signage is also important when planning your route. As of September 2023, there were no dedicated hiking trail markers around Winnert; signage on paths in Wildes Moor was basic and not always up to date. Check the signs on site before settling on a particular route.

Bus and Train

As of September 2023, bus route 146 connects Ohrstedt, Winnert, and Ostenfeld; an extension to Husum is listed. Route 160 runs every two hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 08:00 to 20:00 toward Erfde or Husum. This two-hour service is specifically listed for weekends. Check the current schedules before travelling. As of September 2023, the nearest train station was in Husum.

North Frisia in a Broader Context

North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr, and Amrum. North Frisia also includes ten Halligen, distinctive landforms within the national park. These coastal, island, and Hallig features describe the broader regional context; Winnert’s local character is rooted in the Geest, its farmsteads, and the excursion destination Wildes Moor.
