North Frisia has 441 kilometres of coastline. The five North Frisian islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park include Sylt, Föhr and Amrum, among others. North Frisia also comprises ten Halligen, which lie within the national park as a distinctive landscape formation. The coast, islands and Halligen give the destination several distinct nature themes.
Wadden Sea, birdlife and Hallig Südfall
The North Frisian Wadden Sea is an official nature reserve and part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. At Hauke-Haien-Koog, for example, visitors can observe a rich variety of birdlife. Hallig Südfall offers another clearly defined natural area: it covers 50 hectares, lies in Protection Zone 1 of the national park and has a largely natural landscape.
Access to Südfall is subject to a special condition: the Hallig can only be visited as part of a guided tour, either on a guided walk or with the Wadden Sea horse-drawn carriages. Anyone wishing to visit Südfall should therefore plan a guided tour and check the dates in advance. This keeps the access restriction in mind when planning, alongside the largely natural landscape.
Exhibitions and excursions from Schlüttsiel
At the Schlüttsiel Information Centre, a natural history exhibition introduces visitors to the Wadden Sea and nature conservation. Guided tours on these topics take place there almost daily; in suitable weather, they are followed by a guided walk along the sea dike. National park information centres in North Frisia also offer exhibitions and events about the national parks and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.
From Schlüttsiel, excursion boats travel to the Halligen of Oland, Langeneß, Gröde and Hooge, as well as to the seal banks. Schlüttsiel therefore offers different ways to explore the coastal and Wadden Sea landscape: a natural history exhibition, guided tours and excursions to named destinations. For specific sailings and event dates, it is worth checking the latest information in advance.
Choose cycling routes by distance and landscape
For a direct comparison of the stated route lengths, consider the 27-kilometre Beltringharder Route from Lüttmoorsiel and the 35-kilometre Stollberg-Koog Tour, which starts at the Amsinck House in Reußenköge. The Eiderstedt countryside tour offers a different focus: the cycling route passes through North Frisia’s wide marshland, with quiet paths, nature and glimpses of rural life with cows and sheep.
The North Sea Cycle Route also passes through North Frisia and is part of the “North Sea Cycle Route”. The international long-distance Grenzroute plays a different role: it provides a way to reach North Frisia by bicycle. This distinguishes a cycling route through the region from a way of travelling there by bike, without treating the two routes as equivalent.
Culture and regional specialities
North Frisia is also of interest to culture lovers. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s districts, the region has the highest density of museums and the largest number of registered cultural monuments. This adds a distinct way to explore the region alongside nature and cycling: museums and cultural monuments are potential interests to consider when planning a trip, as are landscapes and wildlife observation.
Another part of the region’s character is Pharisäer, a classic speciality of northern North Frisia. The drink consists of hot coffee with a shot of rum and a topping of whipped cream. Travellers can plan around their own interests and, alongside the Wadden Sea, Halligen, birdlife and cycling routes, explore a specific regional speciality.
