In Westerhever, beaches and the Wadden Sea meet lighthouse history and Eiderstedt building heritage. When planning your visit, specific time windows matter: Wadden Sea walks depend on the tides, and the historic Stockenstieg is only accessible seasonally. If you are looking for accommodation, you can take these conditions into account when choosing your travel dates.

Beach, Wadden Sea and lighthouse

Westerheversand is a four-kilometre-long bathing and walking beach in the national park, accessible only on foot. Stufhusen has a bathing area with a sandy and grassy beach, suitable for swimming and Wadden Sea walks. When choosing between the two, you can go by the features described: at Westerheversand, the long bathing and walking beach; at Stufhusen, the combination of sand, grass and Wadden Sea walks.

The Westerhever Lighthouse is 2.5 kilometres from the outer dike and can only be reached on foot or by bicycle. Weather or flooding may temporarily change the access rules, so check the conditions before your visit. You can explore the lighthouse with an audio guide. As digital visitor services may change, it is also worth checking current availability. Two former keepers’ houses beside the lighthouse host exhibitions about the lighthouse and the work and life of its former keepers.

The Westerhever Lighthouse National Park Station offers nature excursions on the mudflats and in the salt marshes. Programmes and availability may change. Check in advance which activities suit your visit.

Plan around the tides and seasonal paths

Never start a Wadden Sea walk when the tide is coming in. About two hours before low tide is considered a suitable starting time; actual tide times vary by date. So check the times for the day of your visit before planning your walk.

The historic Stockenstieg is a narrow path dating from 1929, between the lighthouse and the dike. It is usually open to pedestrians from June to September, and only in one direction: from the lighthouse to the dike. The path is closed from October to May; during this time, the salt marsh is reserved for resting migratory birds. So when choosing your travel dates, consider whether you want to include the Stockenstieg in your plans.

Church and Eiderstedt building heritage

St. Stephanus was founded around 1200. The west tower dates from 1370; for centuries, it served as a sea mark. In 1804, the church nave was rebuilt as a brick hall church. These dates tell the story of different phases of construction: from the church’s founding, through the later tower, to the rebuilding of the nave.

Westerhever’s architectural heritage also includes nine Haubarg farmhouses. These traditional agricultural buildings of Eiderstedt are associated with the region’s prosperity in the 16th and 17th centuries. Wogemannsburg, a cultural monument, is another part of this heritage. The architectural story therefore stretches from the church and its tower to historic farm buildings and another cultural monument.

A workshop can also be an alternative to the beach and sightseeing: SANDIEK offers sand sculpture workshops in Westerhever. As availability may change, check the dates in advance.

Choose accommodation to match your travel dates

First, consider which experiences you want to shape your days: the beach and Wadden Sea, the history of the lighthouse, or the building heritage around St. Stephanus and the Haubarg farmhouses. For Wadden Sea walks, the tides on the specific day of your visit are what matter; for the Stockenstieg, the season is key. Availability may also change for excursions and digital services.
